Obwarzanek is a famous regional small bread from Cracow. First records of it comes from XIV. It is similar to a bagel, but made out of two long and slim dough pieces, twisted together into a braid and formed into a ring. Before baking it is dipped in boiling water. And traditionally half of it is covered in salt or poppy seed (there is also a sesame version used since around two decades). If you are sightseeing Cracow you will definately get one of those. Looks a lot like "simit" from Turkey.

Well, it is just a form of a bread, but it is a tasty type. It has a bit of sugar added in the dough, but more importantly, because it is boiled before baking the yeast stops working and the pastry is very dense but soft inside and crunchy outside.

I've just learned that very similar thing called Simit originated around the same time in Ottoman Empire. The main difference is that they are dipped in molasses not boilng water.
