Thank you for taking the time to reply back and correct me! I was so certain about the tutorial thread thing I didn't even look it up in advance to double-check. Turns out I was thinking of the work-in-progress thread on Pixelation that was promoted to 'feature chest' quality (unfortunately the image host seems to have long expired, it's a shell of a thread now). I assumed it was Lost Vikings fanart also, based off the vikings' standout features in this picture. Oh well, no harm no foul.
I've never played the game, so it wasn't intended to be Lost Vikings fanart. I played Diablo2/WarCraft 2 though, so I might have been aware of Lost Vikings back in 2006? Could very well be some subconscioius inspiration, I was just making generic vikings.
Turned out to be a pretty good idea to plug all of my own art in the tutorial thread. Though this one actually isn't in it, you're probably thinking of another, unfinished piece of mine that has a (six-eyed) kraken attacking a ship. This piece has been in PJ's "Hall of Fame" for a zillion years though, mostly due to a flaw that favored older submissions, so it's definitely had more than its share of exposure.
I've seen this so many times (mostly thanks to the Pixeljoint forum's tutorial thread) that I hadn't really taken the time to look at the context and realise it was Lost Vikings fanart. Since the second game was released on DOS, PSone and Sega Saturn with a graphical ""upgrade"", I'm morbidly curious what this picture would look like after being run through the pre-rendered wringer. Also, who would voice the kraken? My bet's on Frank Welker.
Is this inspired by nitrome's latest icebreaker game?
I love the dithering!
Outstanding water rendering :) Great scene. Love this!
Haha, I really love the captured viking's facial expression!
Great choice of palette! Hard to believe it's only 13 colors.
Your water so beautiful, it's hard to do it feel like water actually lol
This reminds me of Where's Waldo for some reason. It looks great!
Somehow I like more the old version, it's more light and gives less depth, but I like that more cartoon style.
This looks just amazing, I can't believe it's only 13 colors :D
This has some fun imagery going on. I specifically like how you done the water and how it fades off into the background.
@cure that was such a wonderful pixeljoint specific responce. gosh that's so funny... also nice joke Carnivac
You're a bastard. I hope that purple gorilla gets 10 faves today.
I like the increased contrast and more vibrant colors of the update. Glad your work keeps evolving. Thanks for sharing.
DUDE. I favorited this because it reminded me of The Lost Vikings. BUT IT IS THEM, ISN'T IT?!?!
Man.. it's so great. I hope that one day I can create things of the quality that you do.
this is really good, especially with only 13 colors, very nice :)
I remember this was the first pixel art i had ever seen and it is amazing :)
I love the expression on the Viking who is lifted by the Kraken. This is hilarious! *favourite*
This is great! Love the waves (always a tricky part...)
Oh, Cure, you did this? I've had this saved in my little collection forever!
things with tentacles are always cute, even if you don´t want them to ;)
Amazing
