My latest entry to Pixeldam. This Bug Museum is for the Neon island hood. The background is the Pixeldam base which is not made by me. I show it here so that the wing and shadows don't look odd to those unfamiliar with Pixeldam. There are over 200 colors here but most are from the pixels not made by me. My entry is under 60 colors.

Shadows are always trouble for things I make for Pixeldam. The base, sidewalks and streetlights do not have shadows. If I were, as I have, to make consistent shadows on a piece it can end up looking wierd when the base elemenets don't match. I now go for a somewhat shadowed but not everywhere approach that appears reasonable/believable yet suits the non-shadowed areas. I don't always get it just right. That's why I keep making more

clicked the link in your sig on the forum. got here then thought, dan that's that brilliant piece in Pixeldam ... sweet stuff man. I dig the ornamental ironworkst the subtle transluscency going on on the pavement brought on by the wing is damn good. only thing that strikes me as odd, but not necessarily annoying is the weird shadows going on there's shadows frmo individual corners of the building but the building itself fails to cast a shadow over the entrance kinda hard to explain.

@Jason_c_o, This was addressed in the WIP thread. I see your point and it was an artistic liberty taken in the making of this piece. Just like not all the shadows are correct in the basement floor area and the front legs that also don't shadow. They looked wierd and muddied the ground too much. Again it was an artistic liberty. The wings shadow if correctly placed would have made the fellow going down the stairs too dark. Kudos, to you for a great analitycal observation.

I don't like the shadow for the (bugs) right wing. For everything else it seems the light source is in the top right, but for the wing it's like it's right above it. All the other shadows are skewed left, while that one is just... there. It's very distracting and pulls the eye away from the amazing detail. Though, still a 5, because that bug is damn amazing!

I remember seeing this quite a while back. Truly awesome work, and I agree with robotriot; your iso stuff really goes above and beyond by breaking from that plasticky, generic look that's so common nowadays. Which is how it should be, so keep it up.
