I want to share this pixel art illustration I’ve been working on over the past few months. It’s a piece inspired by AKIRA (1988), developed as part of a project that includes augmented reality, so the illustration was planned and built in multiple layers from the very beginning.
After many sketches and tests, I arrived at a clear composition focused on depth, cinematic lighting, and a strong organic / body-horror feel. The process has been long, but very enjoyable, constantly adjusting readability, contrast, and atmosphere so the image works both as a static illustration and as a base for AR animation.
I’ve been documenting the entire process step by step, and I’m very interested in hearing what other pixel artists think, as many decisions and adjustments came directly from that exchange. Thanks to everyone who took the time to comment and contribute during the development.
