This is an intriguing work!
I think this is the first time I've seen textmode animation, at least this detailed and smooth. Cool!
Thanks! I say it looks off because I don't think the action/reaction between the wings and body looks convincing.
I might estimate 3 hours overall but I didn't keep track. If you compare that to the sprite's size it's pretty good, but of course textmode is very big and bulky. For the amount of detail in the sprite i'd say it's pretty slow, textmode software is just kinda clunky to use and lvllvl sadly was left slightly unfinished IMO, though it's the best option i know of.
The top version though takes a lot less effort. It'd be interesting to think in what types of games it would be useful, since the stuttery movement would probably not be good for something very action oriented. I think almost all textmode style games nowadays use a topdown view with 1 tile per creature.
This is incredibly cool. You say the bottom one looks off but to me it looks so smooth, I can't even imagine the amount of work this kind of thing must take
I like it mostly because of the final style you get, all the restrictions mean that you end up with something very different from normal pixel art. Still, that also means that working with it and picking out the right characters is really fiddly and I don't usually have the patience for it.
I've been enjoying the tileset though, all the characters work pretty well together.
