This picture was inspired by the beautiful song 'Nightshift' by The Commodores from way back in 1985. If you actually listen to the song, it'll make perfect sense that the characters are looking up to the night sky and smiling. Listening to it, I can't help but simply smile myself.

if the moon was to be the focal point of the picture, then yeah, I'd add texture on it. But in this case, I stripped it of any craters so that it don't drag away too much attention.

you know, sometimes less is more. put too much detail in areas that aren't of 1st importance in the picture and you'll get a confusing result, even if technically sound.

The song is dedicated to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, two great singers who passed away in '84. Hope that explains it better :). And btw I'm ukrainian myself :D.

Well, not the roundness. The moon seems rather bland. No craters.

( yep I listened to the song ... to the music of the song I should say.. cause my english is not good enough to understand all the words of the song, sorry  -im french- )

but did you listen to the song? :D it'd really dispel any misinterpretations :)

user
Mykola (Level 3 Corporate Drone) @ 4/28/2007 23:58
better? I don't see how you can make this circular shape any better given the size and colors available for aa.

Awesome.

Moon could be better though.

my bad, I don't know why I interpreted it this way after reading the text

user
Mykola (Level 3 Corporate Drone) @ 4/28/2007 06:13
they aren't looking at the moon actually. they're just staring into the sky :).

I like it !  At first I thought the characters were buildings tho
I wonder if you flip horizontally the top half it wouldn't be more clear the characters are looking at the moon..

Stitchy your comment makes great sense :). the thing is - I wanted the characters to NOT fit in.. they're most certainly out-of-blue and contrasting with their soft shading and white cubic silhouettes :) AND their outlines too

I wanted them to sort of.. pop out from the rest of the picture :) that's why the marshmallow-style shading :D

I know exactly what you're saying. :) Thing is.. I don't know if it's the right way to explain it.. But I always prefer to gamble on my work. In fact if it feels 'right', I just feel the NEED add something oddball.. Why I can't quite explain.. I just like to have unconventional stuff. Intentional imperfections and out-of-place things. Hope that makes sense :)

Well, composition confusion aside, I really like this piece. It's cute, colorful, and pretty original/odd. Okay, so it makes sense when it comes to my tastes. My only critique without changing the whole piece would be to make the shading on the figures a little darker, because it's a little hard to see at this point. If you wanted to go back and fiddle with this piece, and make the figures "fit in" the style of the picture, you could get rid of most of the outlining and give them some heavy, dithered shading. I know there are some examples of what I'm talking about on the site, but... you might just have to try and figure out my confusing comment.

Anyways! Favorited~

After staring at this for a while and reading the comments i'd have to say that something feels like it doesn't belong.  Style-wise, it's the characters.  If they were buildings, less cartoony and taller it would fit better.  But I understand you were depicting a song and you captured the mood nicely.

Your conterpoint sure did make sense. I give my opinions and try to explain the 'why' rather than give a 'because' just for feedback's sake and is never an order or demand. When the artist (whomever it is) disagrees and expresses their 'why' then the artist always wins and I almost always digress, as is the case here. This of course is only valid on the artistic/subjective not the technical side of things which I am hard-headed about.

ps: as soon as I posted my original comment there was a 'fav' for this pixel so from the viewers standpoint its a balanced pixel and kicking ass on occasion feel awesome...makes me feel all ensellitis-like XD

LOL.. jal I hope you agree that I didn't tell you off, I just told my opinion :), plus (even though that doesn't guarantee I'm right) my arguments made sense, didn't they ;)?

Last minute note. (ya it's a double post but it's my own piece so I don't care).

and this might explain the composition a bit to whoever might find it wrong (I really think it's a proper compo.)

instead of breaking it into L R halves, think of it more as TOP and BOTTOM halves. The composition makes more sense if you look at it like that. AND it will make even more sense, when the picture will be introduced on the medium it was actually designed for...

k, then I'm taking my ball, not playing with you ever again and telling my mommy you told me off in a way that left me vulnerable and shamed

the left side is 'different' intentionaly. just as the not-uniform dither and the on-off aa on the trees. it might be not right, but really.. I wanted it all that way. I wanted it to make the viewer feel 'funny' or weird.. whether it's in 'funny' a good way is of course not up to me to decide :).

Also you just hate my palmtrees dontcha :D?

Composition wise.. I prefer to think it has a proper diagonal/triangular composition :P. Plus the palms are supposed to be further than the dudes on the left from the viewer, so there's no way I'm redrawing them and making them bigger/closer :|..

I wanted to pull the hue futher on the darkest purple to a blue actually.. but I reverted it to purple at the last minute :D.

last but not least when the hell did birds = emo? seagulls are just a symbol of the ocean/seaside to me just like the palms. And I'm albsolutely going to keep em.

Thanks for the crits tho, haven't had my ass kicked for a long time. :D

Something funny going on here. If you divide the pixel in half the right side is of a different look than the left side. As a whole, composition wise the palm trees messes things up because the weigth of the moon, characters in whites on the left are equal. The palms do not balance things out enough to have the whole left side, not to mention they are not the prettiest of palm trees. What's with the birds anyway, you're not going emo on me are ya'?

I can see this turn around easily enough if you get your shotgun and shoot the birds then using the blue at the very top (dark purple in use now is cool too) you redraw the palm in silhouette in the foreground real close to the viewer to the height just under where the lowest bird is now using a slightly more boxy style but not as much as the characters.

Colors are nice.

EDIT: I can see the biggest character looking like a piano and the real skinny looking like a flute, maybe some more instrument-ish things on the others...
