The piece looks good, but there are unnecessary shades in the middle of each intersection between the squares.

You may want to lighten those shades.

indeed. also, i'm a bit suspicius, are those shadows pixel art? that amount of colors are a totally waste of effort, thus the shadow itself is not necesary(not for a chessboard). i suggest you to post this in the WIP section of the forums to get some C+C on how to improve this work.

This has a cool 3D effect but its too much for a chessboard, take out the shading on the spaces, you could shade the spaces though, somehow different not as noticable.
