Having it look like a final fantasy battle background was basically kind of the whole point. It wasn't really referenced from other stuff beyond the extent of it having similar scenery that included trees and mountains and dirt patches and stuff, but the actual look and style of it is (I would hope) somewhat unique imo.
Although it looks quite nice, is it just me, or does this look rather similar to the FFV/FFV Advance grasslands battle background? It's certainly not ripped, but I would say it was heavily referenced...
Really beautiful! Anyway, since (to me) the clouds (whose shape is indeed very convincing) seem to reach to the back of the scene (to where the further mountains are), the should lose some contrast as well. I feel their contrast remains the same too much all over the picture. Also, they (the clouds) should reflect on the water, which would display some more understanding of perspective, as the would intersect with the mountains in the water (which they don't on the upper side of the horizon ;). So much for my blather
it looks very nice, but somehow i think the trees and the grass dont fit each other perfectly (maybe cause of the saturation)? (i know, a pine (or something) tree does have a bit grey-blue-greenish needles/leafs but still, maybe a bit more saturation on the trees and drop shadow would have done the trick)...
I really like this. The only crit I would make is regarding the vanishing point on the tree line. As for water, It's fine. If anything maybe add some horizontally shifted rows in the reflection that would fix that water issue. I'm faving too in any case. Awesome
I don't quite like the way you solved the trees but overall piece is quite good. Now add some object of interest!
Edit: Ok, on a second look, it looks even worse. Everyhting seems to be just random playing and overall scene is monotonous. Lack of depth, trees are all the same, no composition at all. Its just seems good luck to me.
Beautifully rendered. Is it just me, but does it look to have two vanishing points? The near trees seem to vanish well below the horizon of the far trees and mountains. I guess the topography is supposed to be sloping down to the lake, but it looks to me more like the trees are sinking into the ground.
@jalonso this was made as a background for an rpg maker game, so some of the colors used (pretty much just the trees, really) were referenced from an existing tileset that was intended to be used for the game. Apart from that, though, the image is completely original.
I like this piece alot, the clouds are beautiful and even though theres horrible dirt spots in the grass it still is very pretty! But you should have AAd the grass touching the water, but still awesome!

This is amazing. I never understand how you guys are so good with backgrounds! Just to nitpick, the rock that's farthest back seems to have the same amount of detail as the rocks that are closest to the screen. It kind of creates the floating rocks illusion. Still though, looks realistic, but still retains a good pixel quality.
