Thanks, surt, I'm glad to hear that, because I was going for a sort of video game style portrait. I'm also trying to get away from dull linear ramps, and in my experiments I've found that a very desaturated color (it's not actually a gray) works well to break up the monotony, not to mention providing a shade for that 5 o'clock shadow without adding a color.
