You should dither the background to make a smoother gradient. That's all I think could improve this piece...

Looks suspiciously like a color reduction, but if this is legitimate, nice job. To clear up any confusion, you could post a reference picture.

In fact its not highlights, its a white and a gray strip on the shoulder part of the t-shirt

Nice color selection, but the BG could be having a nicer gradient!
The hair and face shadow are really nice!

I love the simplicity of this, it's a very clean piece which works well. Not too sure about the shirt though, i think plain red without the highlights would have worked great :)
