demoscene is a computer art subculture that has its roots in the cracking scene of the 1980s and that is specialized in producing so-called demos (non-interactive audio-visual presentations run real-time on a computer, showing the artistic and/or programming skills of the creators, thanx wikipedia =).. http://www.scheib.net/play/demos/what/hugi/index.html has more.

the demoscene brought up a quite a number of pixel-artists.. some of them are now reappearing here on pixeljoint, some just submitting their old goodies, some (like ilkke+jamon, exocet or my humble self even) stay longer..

in terms of this piece, i'm with tomba.. i don't think, he had a scanner back in 1993 - i assume they where hell expensive - especially in the czech republic =) tradionally photos where copied using the grid-copy method (drawing a help-grid on the photo and repixel it on a grid on your screen).. 100% hand work, 100% pixel

also, it seems quite difficult to post 15 year old references

Wow, this is super great! I have no crit at all! Can't believe the hair is done so simply while looking at it when zoomed, yet it looks great at normal zoom level..

I remember topic at Pixelation in which artist of Tyrian arrived and was told that his graphics are not called pixelart there. I guess he was confused as in 90-s there was not much point in not using DPaint at full and try to emulate the styles of old, while many things were still done at pixel level. Last year I had a little interview with artist of Cool Spot if Cool Spot sprite was pixelart or 3D-model. He said that it is purely pixelart and mentioned Dpaint.

Thank you behind sincere words. Tall story it is not, is that a only much work with fine crossing in face behind using only 32 colours. Believe, that the about year 1993 was very heavy get scanner on Amigu 500. But method of what am it did, is scanning look - alike

The perfectly even spacing and x's? That's called dithering. I can't really see much non pixel art in here. All of the techniques are normal.

Is this really pixelart? The perfectly even spacing of the dots- and the x's in the background- don't look particularly hand-pixelled- plus you've got a bunch of unneccessary colours and the border of the hair looks a bit too good to be true. It's quite blurry, as well... Maybe if there were a couple of those one-pixel lines over the eyes that didn't follow a perfect diagonal grid this would be more 'believable' as pixelart. Also, the break in the gradient of the shirt between the main image and the 'edge' of the 'plaque' seems a bit too jarring, if the rest of the image is handmade.

Now, if this is hand-pixelled, then well done... but it just seems a bit mechanical to my eyes, not that I'm perfect. It's just a bit too much diagonal and a bit too little of anything else for me to believe it.
