Cool backstory. Mechanist/alchemist/demon spirits sounds like as good an idea as any to deal with world energy problems. I just saw your MS paint sketch of this over on pixelation. It came out great, and much cooler than the Genji 2 crab :)
ben - i must be out of the loop; Faktablad asked the same question and i still don't get it ^^
sal - the power source is not described in-game, we prefer to leave it to the imagination*. as far as the lighting, there are a lot of bugs to work out, as, like Adam guessed, this is part of a much larger, slightly broken screenshot.
* the only thing known is that they do require fuel, which is provided by certain mechanics. Many years later after both mechanists and alchemists are banned by the church, this fuel cannot be reproduced, and so the two arts combine, imbuing the mechanical constructs with demons spirits. that's a lot of gibberish now though since none of that has to do with the partisan storyline. :P
Sweet! is it steam powered? I love the design. Great palette, especially in the shadows. Light source is a little confusing. Seems the wooden wall and window should receive light along the same trajectory as the red brick
My only complaint is the way the border is cut makes it look like a small bit of a screenshot. I want to see the whole shot! 6/7
edit: btw it's amazing.

Is...Is that...Is that Sel-out on the window sills? *shakes head, disappointingly*
Heh, just kidding. I like the crab-like creature, though I'm more fond of the blue version in the preview. However, I can understand the palette swap, as the blue one wouldn't stand out as much on the blue-ish background of the sidewalk, you chose for it. I especially like the little puffs of smoke.
