There's something about this that's quite striking. At first glance I thought the pixeling to be just mediocre; basic gradient shading contrasting with bright light displays. Zooming in though there's still something appealing about the whole piece. Although perhaps the metal could be shaded better and the actual robot cleaned up a bit I think the colors and execution works on these guys. The grass below is certainly nothing extraordinary but at the same time the pleasantly rich tones and shading style gives off a nice marble texture. Just like the grass, the wooded backdrop is certainly not that difficult but the color and style gives off a great sense of atmosphere. Overall those two portions do a great job of supplementing the image without distracting the viewer from the focal point of the piece. It's an interesting option to display a sprite in such a way (I'd like to see more lone sprite displays presented like this), and an even greater achievement to pull it off so well. I think there's a fine line between placing a sprite in a setting and having it look like an unfinished mockup and using a background to supplement the sprite you are trying to show (you didn't cross it.)
I think you have a certain wonderful knack for art and composition.
