That's an explosion for a simple platformer game I'm working on. I really love the result, especially as I didn't use any references this time around, and did it relatively quickly (like 4 hours, tops).
I'm dumping all visuals I make for this game in this pixelation thread: http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=6750 (I might also paste the same thread on pixeljoint forums, dunno)

flyguy's a marine and i'm sure he's seen shit blow up before. I also think that it should be minutes longer before the smoke falls back down even if its supposed to be cartoony. Maybe some debris could fall instead? I don't mean to be overly critical, this is a great animation, far beyond anything I could accomplish.
Well the idea is that there is a column of warm air in the middle that raises the smoke but also pushes it away from the center, and that the smoke falls off this "heat column" after being pushed on top then outward enough. The problem might be that the smoke all falls sort of together more or less at the same time instead of randomly.
For the animation's speed, I don't see the problem though, it really looks fine to me! I'm pretty sure that any faster would make the smoke dissipate unrealistically fast. Maybe I should make the fireball part faster and the smoke part slower by adding frames to it.....?
Finally an explosion on PJ that looks somewhat natural. The only thing I would fix is the very end of the animation the smoke comes back toward the explosion area. This cannot happen due ot the great amount of heat where the explosion occured, the smoke would continue moving in an outward direction till it disipates. I think it would also look neat if you threw in a few tiny swirls in the plumes toward the end as it clears.
