Wasn't happy with the original so I decided to redo it the way it should have been done. Thanks to the folks at pixelation for guidance and critique. I'm think I'm satisfied with it now.
oh, i remember this game. i was young when it came out. anyway, this is amazing; i love the way everything is on a 90-45 degree angle. i'll have to try to make something like this.
The previous one looked Another World-y, and that game's style had it's advantage in motion not in stills. That's why the extra detail is such a big improvement here. Good job!
Not to mention it looks like it would be fun to play.
Well it sure isn't easy to please everyone, but I gave it a go. It seems the ambience of the original was lost so I've tried to correct things a little. Toned down the background a bit, is now leaning towards a spectral blue rather than yellow. Higher contrast in the tiles. Brighter green on the reaver and soul. Also increased saturation of the enemy. Used some forground colours in the pillars and statue, and toned down the water highlights, which brought the color count down from 38 to 33. Thanks for the comments/crits everyone. :)
oh and i'm glad everyone likes the mountains, really gotta thank helm for pushing me on that.
watched this on pixelation, a great remix. Definitely something to put in the study folder, for a myriad of reasons. The last version I had seen until this one was without the mountains, an addition I absolutely adore. great stuff and congrats on a job well done.
I liked the old one more, had a better ambiente, this one is just better pixeled but...yea...I miss the disaster in this mockup! Background and Foreground are merging...background should be not as strong as it is right now, same with the water...doesn't really need a reflection, and for using 38 colors I miss some more blue tones D: you totally destroyed the water...meh D:
Ohh, how I loved the original Soul Reaver - it was basically a better 3D Castlevania than actual Castlevania games, with beautifully haunting art direction and inventive, balanced gameplay.
This could TOTALLY be an awesome 2D metroidvania game!
One nitpick - there is no water in spirit realm. In the game - it's just not there at all.
Beautiful! My only nitpick is that the enemy on the other side of the pool blends too much with the tiles. His colors are very close to those of the statue's. Maybe it'd work if you gave him some bright green specular highlights, just something to make him pop out a little more.

@rabidbaboy: haha, thanks man i'm glad you like it. although I wouldn't have the patience for a full game, I could turn this into a playable demo. I'm currently reading up on animation, and if i can give raziel some decent movement then i'll make it happen.
You, my friend, have just amazed me. Make this happen, man, seriously.
The ambience, the background, that vampireling (forgot what they're called), even Raziel. Man, one my favorite games in 100% pixelled form is something of a dream of mine, which I have no patience for. MAKE. THIS. HAPPEN.
