I did this piece for the weekly challenge 'Alien Building'.  Its the kind of structure you would only find on an alien planet, where the rules of our universe don't apply.  Have fun looking for all the bits that don't make sense.
I was going to animate it but ran out of time

Thanks for comments everyone, I wish I had more time to add extra detail to it, and it could look really cool with some animation.  Perhaps i'll revise it in the distant future.
