I think it's cool. I'm new at pixeling too, and this beats me =D
That's okay, but maybe you should look at other pixel art pieces and see how they shade. Don't just put the darkest color around the outline, then a lighter color around that and so on. Its called "pillow shading". What you should do is put the light colors where you think the light would hit the surface most.
Here is an edit. Your outlines are good so your halfway there. U just need to work on shading and palletes.

No, I did all the shading by hand. I'm not that great at creating my own palettes yet, so I often end up using Photoshop's default color swatches for my color choices. That's maybe what you're noticing... Sorry, I'm still really new to this.
You're not using some sort oif gradient fill to do the shading are (like in dpaint, graf2x)? The problem with this piece is how you shade things.
