Holy molly, that's like reality, but with 5 colors! NICE!
saehn - smoothing of edges is impossible with ZX restrictions /only 2 colours in 8x8 block/, and you cant use 2 shades of one colour in 8x8 block, low level dithering .. quite do not know what is it .. but dithering used in this image is already .. low level.
dr.D - i used DARK yellow only on wheels, their left part in both cases /4 blocks exactly/, and black, red /bright ON/, yellow /bright ON/, white /bright ON/ for others parts of the scene.
shiru - watch my other "monkey" conversion.
There are many converters to ZX Spectrum limitations, for example members.inode.at/838331/retrox.html and bmp2scr (can't find the page now) from same author, which gives very similar results when duotone dithering applied. In this case I can't decide is this pixeled (if so, very well then), or this is post-conversion edit. In all ZX graphics compos the workstages are required to resolve any doubts.
Smoothing of edges would be difficult, and likely inconsistent (not applied) in some areas, due to the severe restrictions of the piece. Personally I don't believe it's a reduction anyway, it's certainly not without imperfections.. and besides are there even programs that can reduce with these kind of restrictions?
On an aesthetic level, I think it looks great, especially for the restrictions used. However, could be slightly improved by using more solid blocks of color in some places.. There is just too much dithering for my tastes, and I'm not asking you to use different colors, just reconsider the way you're using the colors that are already in the block. Such as, for example, maybe adding edge highlights where the door splits.
On a technical level, again, too much dithering and messy edges, not to mention that where in other places it's impossible to spot, in some places it's very apparent, the 'blocks' of 2-colors, mainly on the front of the car. I really don't think the dark yellow is needed as it's not very distinguishable from the lighter yellow, allowing you to save a color.
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but this looks wired/converted. There isn't any low-level dithering or smoothing of edges that one typically sees in pixel art. Do you have any workstages? Would be interesting to see.
common, you made this from a photo! but if not; great job!!
