I tried to do something it when I started this piece, could make it look natural enough any other way, I might not be skilled enough with face anatomy tho.

&

Same thing in this as 1, couldn't make it look good any other way.

Totally understand.  But before leaving this point, try a one-step darker colour on the right half of his neck (our right), just under the chin (the orange-ish hue you used for the mouth, maybe).

Our or his left? Will try to fix it, if I can.

Our left.

This one is intented, as his cameo is him sitting in a bar drinking milk (I hope I don't get hanged by Link fans, but I'm one too so...).

As long as it's Lon Lon milk, who can complain?  ;)

Anyway, I can try to fix the sleeve, but other than that, I think this one is finished. You really helped me with this, and onek's edit helped too with the sleeves and the sheat strap (correct word this time?).

The word for that band holding the sword sheath is 'baldric' (I'm just a daft repository of odd weapon and armour facts, I know...) and I'm really glad I was able to help.

And thanks, onek, for that trippy edit!

Cheers,

JD

Thank you, and I'm glad you can accept the pink hair now.

1. I think some shadow needs to go under the chin, to help keep the face from blending into a featureless field

I tried to do something it when I started this piece, could make it look natural enough any other way, I might not be skilled enough with face anatomy tho.

2. the nose may need a bit more of a point

Same thing in this as 1, couldn't make it look good any other way.

3. the hem of the left sleeve still doesn't overlap the bicep far enough (onek's edit is one example of a fix for this)

Our or his left? Will try to fix it, if I can.

4. his stomach is still much fatter than his chest!  (beer-belly Link? O.o)

Gotta start making ingame sprite for him next.

Wow, I didn't know if it could get even better, but it looks great, Relix!

Making the undershirt all the grey-blue looks fab.

I'm not a dither expert, but it looks okay to me.

I think I'm getting used to the pink hair after looking at it for so long O.o.

I wasn't sure if my advice was useful or not, or would match what you were trying to achieve with the piece, so I appreciate your giving it a shot!

If I may make just a short list of final things that jump out at me:

  1. I think some shadow needs to go under the chin, to help keep the face from blending into a featureless field
  2. the nose may need a bit more of a point
  3. the hem of the left sleeve still doesn't overlap the bicep far enough (onek's edit is one example of a fix for this)
  4. his stomach is still much fatter than his chest!  (beer-belly Link? O.o)

Don't know if these things bother you, though (it's hard to decide what will appeal to the most people, unfortunately!).

Thank you, and going great!

Lied about the new year part, got the colour count down to 17. I have to keep the outline, as this's for a game, and everything else has a outline too (Not a Zelda fan-game tho). I discovered the ditchering technique, I might have gone a little overboard with it. I edited the sleeves, but left the armpit like that. Used the shading colour form the hair as a main colour, and the old main colour as highlight. The blue is now more grey, maknig it less eye-killing.

agree with ninja crow. this is actually ok, but could need some technical improvement...  24 colors are rly a lot for this piece. palettes are very important in pixel art....at least skin, hair and belt colors are interchangeable, and the greys of the shirt arent needed at all... also  id suggest to make it less jaggy and remove the outlines

>>EDIT<< ... with 6 colors

The reference to ALTTP is awesome in this. :)

It could definitely use some more work, it looks rather incomplete.

Thanks, I'll fix it after the new year, have to enjoy my holiday now.

@ 1.  Hey, if it's a style choice, and you have the experience to make the call, then by all means stick to it.  I might suggest that the redder hair could be a theme variant on the standard Link, and would be a lot easier to accept if the costume also had alternate colours (as they do in things like four swords).  I don't know if this is worth the trouble to test, though, especially if you do change the hair slightly to be more complimentary to the green.

@ 2.  Sharp joins between colours - the smoother the gradient the more hues needed.

In the end you gotta use the colours you need, but you'd be surprised how many you can sometimes do without when you try.  Do the darkest colours of one ramp (the browns, say) look good bordering the greens, say?  Will a red/magenta from the hair look good bordering the skin, say?  I'm often able to use a colour I already have in my palette to AA something, for example.  But this is one area where I'm most tempted to break the rules, though, and use as many colours as I need - but I try really hard to constrict first.

Sorry, don't know much about GG.

@ 3.  Hey, me too!  The most successful people I see on the WIP forum never stop trying all kinds of stuff, because when something works, it sticks, and eventually the piece accumulates all the correct details it needs.

I just noticed a couple of details (I don't think they're necessary for getting the piece 'accepted' but I thought I'd point them out if you have time to work on them):

  1. the armpit on the left is pretty sharp - I think it needs to be lowered and relaxed a bit
  2. the green sleeve on the left needs to be wider over the bicep to improve the illusion of a covering layer of cloth
  3. his abdomen shouldn't be wider than his chest
  4. the green collar on the right seems to be an unnatural shape - jutting out too far methinks
  5. the shading looks pretty good generally, except for the left side of his tunic, where the edge of the dark green and medium green are the same shape - unlikely and distracting (could be fixed at the same time as 1. if you have the time to attend to it)

Wow, sorry if that seems like a lot of thou-shalt-nots, but I like the piece (especially the head/face) and hope to see it voted into the gallery soon.

1. The hair stays pink, sorry. I can drop the brightness tho. As for the blue, I might chance it for something else.

2. What do you mean by flat shaded style?

I can drop one colour from the skin, the two grays, maybe one from the hair. But the others aren't too similar in my opinion, unless I drop the fourth green, but then I can't make the hat like that, it looks too dull without the highlight. And the sheat, er belt(?) might be possible with only two colours, but I don't like using outline colours other than outlinig, unless I really have to.

Also, I used graphics gale to count the colours, it seems to lie a bit?

3. I'm still learning this stuff, so any kind tips are welcome.

Sorry, Relix, but at this scale the pink is unacceptable. At any rate Link was supposed to have amber or honey-coloured hair, as this manual page depicts, but to make it stand out in such a small sprite, they used the pinker hue (not because he 'really' had pink hair).  And it worked, because I've never played the game and been shocked that his hair was pink - I assumed it was a redder, browner colour like all the early art depicting Link.

Ahem - if you still need it to be pink (sometimes ya just gotta be a rebel, right?) as a purely abstract style choice (since it cannot be defended as the 'real' or even 'original' colour) then please go for a less eye-gouging hue.  The blue is also pretty harsh.

That's style...and for technical, I think a lot of people here are going to wonder why it took so many colours for something that has a flat shaded style.  You have six colour areas, which appear to only have 2 to 3 shades each (making 12 to 18 total) which means a little care could easily make your pallete fit into something like 16 (sorry, there's no universal law that says you need to constrain, but I at least get more pleasure from a picture when I think, 'hey this would really fit in a game') and if the colours look too much like each other anyway, you might as well cull the useless ones.

Believe it or not, if the hair, and two shirt colours are similar enough, they can shade each other and even be used for AA!  Here's an example by DawnBringer, clearly showing a blue, a red, and a green in happy company.

Good luck, and I like picture in general, so please don't get discouraged!

What do you mean?

He had pink hair in Alttp. And blue shirt, why not?

It's not supposed to be any Link that's been in a game, but Link in general.

What's with his purple hair and the blue shirt?
