When i read about this challenge, i immediately thought of doing something steampunk style, for some reason. The choice of an M is pretty obvious.

I put much time on this piece, drawing and deleting a lot of times, recalibrating palette (first time i try hue shift in gradients), and trying to animate the steam in a nice looking way. Not bad i guess, i think i learned a lot with this piece!

If someone have suggestions or critics please tell me, i always want to know other points of view!

PS: The animation timing is a little slowed down in Google Chrome. Best viewed on Firefox.

Congrats for the blue ribbon! I agree with Dusty about the steam. Though you have the colors to do some fancy fadeouts I think the effect works great as it is right now.

I thought the steam was the best part. The animation of it is so fluid, and I don't think the solid white detracts from it at all.

Congrats! I knew this would win the week : p

In case you care about the steam:

The main problem with it is that its pure white and appears solid and not trans. Use grey/blues and start light and FADE to darker as it steams.

Yay! My first first place!!! I'm so happy! Thanks everyone for feedbacks and support.

The most frequent comment i received is about the (unshaded) steam. I take note of that, and i will modify it when i got some time!

This should win the week.

Oh hey, that is very cool. The pure white steam looks a little strange with everything else being so rendered, and I think some shading would help it, but this is really well done!

Very nice. looking great, itsjust the smoke which needs some shading...

Regards

I think the smoke could have done with a second colour in it to give it more depth like the rest of the pixel. I have to say though that this is a great looking piece!

 Thanks everyone for the feedbacks!

@Stickman: i think you're right, the white steam is a little out of place, but i've had a hard time with the 12 colors limit, and i wanted the smoke to "stand out" from the rest. But for the most it was a matter of time left.

@Inphy: I choose to use a perpective that looked angled, because i think that is more interesting than full frontal perspective. But i did not expect that it will remind Escher in some way!

@Manupix: i agree for steam dissolve. I did not think of dissolving with color. The black shadow going into the background was to break the straight line of the ground. Maybe unnecessary, but i think it gives more to a flat ground.

Amazing... you've got my vote!

user
Manupix (Level 11 Godfather) @ 1/10/2010 14:48

Excellently animated! The dial move is impressively smooth.

Only things: steam should dissolve into greys; the black shadow going into the bg was maybe not necessary.

Sweet animation, I especially like the steam and that gear interacting with it. The perspective seems Escherish, but maybe that's on purpose?

user
Stickman (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 1/10/2010 13:44

Very nice letter and I love the steampunk design. The steam is really nicely animated, although I feel the plain white colour looks a little out of place.

Great pic
