This piece was done for a project in my Philosophy class. It was originally intended to be much more cartoon-like, but I changed my mind part of the way through.

It's not perfect. The collar's weird, the shading on the robe-thing looks like it's taped on top of the actual robe, the face isn't long enough, etc. However, being my first true shot at pixel art with a limited number of colors, I'm quite proud of it.

This piece is not original , but it was not traced either. I used this painting by Sir Godfrey Kneller as a reference:

Actually, let me take that back. I did scale down the photo towards the end to trace the portrait frame with the oval tool, but that's as far as I went, I swear!

Overall the colors are great.  Even the robe is pretty good, but the face is terrible..lol  I did a quick edit from your reference just because I was curious.  Not that mine is too much better.  At least the red lips are toned down a bit as mentioned by onek.

This could be a great peice if some more time was put into the like-ness.

Wow, I didn't think I'd get a new one torn this quickly.

Yeah, this piece isn't all that great. In fact, it's really, really bad. The story behind this was that I had taken a few shots at pixel art before, but it kinda fell through when I kept using too many colors. So, when I decided to do this picture, I selected a few colors and decided to stick with them until the end. The violet was added at the end because when I tried using both the red and the blue in the background, it looked really bad. I do agree with you on the dithering. The problem was that, at the time, I had a hard time finding good dithering tutorials, so I just decided to alternate colors.

What I'm getting at was that this whole thing was really just experimental. Thank you for all of your help, I'll certainly keep your suggestions in mind when I am drawing pixel art in the future. I don't quite think I have enough sanity left to fix this one at the moment, though.

By the way, I should have added in my description that I was most certainly not going for realism. I'm no where near talented enough to do something like that yet! Your edit looks incredible.

doesnt look anything like the original... lips are way too red and look like lipstick  ... the shading doesnt work, and makes it very flat... also im not fond of ur dithering, it doesnt work aswell, and kinda makes no sense ....for example on the clothes, where u mixed the red with the blue,. it just seems like violett, which u already have in ur palette,...also the light blue and the grey on the scarf (?) are the almost the same brightness.. why not choose for a single greyish blue in first place..? that ll save one more color... all in all its just very noisy ... you should be using ditherin very rarely on soft textures like skin or clothes anyway.... also its very hard rework flaws, which are defintly there, with all that dither

maybe this edit helps a bit... using 6 colors
