My favourite mountain, in crazy colors.

D-Palette #1: totally unbalanced, seriously lacks in dark tones, yet fun! The biggest setback is the impossibility to AA the main mountain upper borders.

I started this piece with the Magenta challenge restrictions, couldn't make it look right. Layer dump here.

Background mountains are realistic (from memory and sketches; I saw them everyday last month), foreground is not, just a mix of some winter visual experiences. Trees are from sketches too.

I'm not so sure I really like the garish greeting card look.

The watercolor look unexpectedly appeared when I was blocking the sky, decided to keep it. This choice is questionnable too.

Update: trees sketch scan here.

Nice colors!

Love the watercolor feeling this gives off. Very nice. :)

grave (Level 9 Federal Agent) @ 2/14/2010 20:28

I really love this, it is perfect.

Maybe it's just some of the warmer colors...such as the orange and darker red and maybe even the yellow that don't feel like winter.  I'm from New England and the contrast of the seasons is very evident here.  Even the exposed leaves on the ground are much more of a muted orange even with the sun on them.

Maybe this will explain what I mean.  This is a picture from my front window from about a month ago:   ...and unfortunately it still looks like this.  :-(

There are a ton more, just look up WPA posters on Google. I think they're awesome. The world's first vector art :D

Manupix (Level 11 Godfather) @ 2/14/2010 16:11

Thanks for all the nice comments, and for that link: those posters are wonderful! =)

Jabber (Level 3 Private Eye) @ 2/14/2010 14:49

 I love you

The shading is nothing exceptional but the colors are really, really good. They remind me of posters for the various US National Parks that were commissioned during the Great Depression as part of the WPA...

Have no words to say.

Manupix (Level 11 Godfather) @ 2/12/2010 09:06

Thanks guys! Glad you like it.

@ dpixel: look again! There's more color everywhere than you think, both in what we see and in how we see. Learning art is mostly learning to see, and I love it.

@ AB: the pointy things would be cypresses. The ones in the middle are small oaks, not sure about the exact species. Their leaves die but many don't fall for months, they're a very nice light brown.

@ ska: thanks, good point. I guess I AAed too uniformly, there's too much of it in some other places.

skamocore (Level 11 Dolphin) @ 2/12/2010 08:43

Nice use of the palette, I really like the building.

I think you could improve the AA, some parts look a bit jaggy. Especially the trees where you're just using 1 or 2 pixels to AA a long line. Tree edit.

Just stopping by to say that I really like it.

By the way, how called those trees which have leaves intact?

jeremy (Level 11 Sphinx) @ 2/11/2010 20:11

Real pretty. I've already saved DPalette, guess I have to give it a spin now! :D

ParkerBabyDiaperCompany (Level 2 King Checker) @ 2/11/2010 18:42

you're one of my favorite people

Dino502Run (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 2/11/2010 18:30

Great use of colors colors and detail

JediDude (Level 4 Murderer) @ 2/11/2010 16:34

I really like this, I don't know exactly why, but its really good.

asukicco (Level 9 Necrophiliac) @ 2/11/2010 15:41

Good God! I love the way you used the palette!

Robinhood (Level 9 Boss) @ 2/11/2010 15:31

It does look like water color. :D  Hmm, colors are nice too, really nice job on the leafless tree.  The red trees look a bit odd, but with the palette you have its pretty good.

dpixel (Level 9 Vice President) @ 2/11/2010 14:46

I'm not seeing much in the way of winter colors...At least not where I'm from.    Nice palette none the less.

Mathias (Level 6 Garbage) @ 2/11/2010 14:21

Manupix, my first thought on this was that you did it! The crazy palette gave it away. Your color usage never ceases to inspire me.

RollerKingdom (Level 7 Mass Murderer) @ 2/11/2010 13:36

Very nice job :) I really liked the colors..

Kudohazama (Level 5 Rokkyu) @ 2/11/2010 13:08
