The tiltle shows - "room for one last project"... if indeed this is your last project .. then wishing u all the best for your future endeavours....
I'm pretty new to the world of pixel art ... but out of all the art i have seen .. your work seems to be among the best in the lot .... really great work ....
I... I love you. D:
So, this is for a game? Wow. I hope you make this one be the one you finish, 'cause I want to play it.
This is amazing I absolutely love the buddhas :D
I love everything, The story also because I laugh alot to ^^
I really liked this fabulous art piece, but not as much as i've enjoyed the story you shared with us... I'll give it a fav, not as much as I like you pixelart, but to give a fav to that trhee laughing monks...
Thank you.
am I reading into it or is this the answer to the question that troubled your head when you said you wouldnt pixel anymore?. it seems a perfect fit. Might I ask....what kind of game is it....platformer?you working on it with anyone else? can you spill anything?
@fool, really thx for you sharing your art with us :). Your a pixel artist leyend already and we all have the pleasure to have you around this community from time to time. Dont matter what is, you always show us how you put all your effort in your pieces and how humble you are...
about the piece... (thinking out of the cube) you should add a tittle in chinese letters and print poster for sale! XDDD... seriously.... grettings and thx for appear from time to time! :DDD...
The monk on the left has less contrast in its shadows along the lower half (in comparison to the right monk), but has more contrast in the head. I really like what you do with distant objects having low contrast, but this seems a bit inconsistent, especially with them appearing to be at the same depth level.
might also add...just for the sake of boredom, that you could add a somewhat fog effect to the bottom by lighting up areas :D? so they feel more mighty and giant
Congratulations on creating this month's #1 piece Fool!
pffff no comments, you are one light in this way of pixelart...
Well, I start to doubt that you are human... this is insanely goooooood!
I don't know if you draw by yourself the clouds but for the statues, i can fully understand the amount of work, bIG sIZE fOr a GrEat WoRk !
Thanks Blackbeltdude. I was waiting for someone to express my thoughts as I could not find the words.
Personally, I've always hated when people use the word "perfect" with regards to art. It's far too precise of a term for something that's far too subjective.
What I really love about Fool's art (and I mean to use that term in the most sincere way possible), is that he always created a mood or level of emotion in his pieces. That to me is what makes his work truly fantastic; the character that oozes out of his work and the narrative that compels it to do so, is what draws me to it every time. Moreover, I think he's able to be so effective in that process because he not only understands his medium intimately, but also is doing things for the sheer joy of it.
I remember seeing the thumbnail for this thinking that it would have had to have been someone effectively emulating Fool's work. I was quite happy when I saw that it was the man himself posting more of his fantastic talents on this site. :)
These pieces are like godsends...How do you manage to churn them out so quickly? You must have immense amounts of experience.
The backstory is interesting...I suppose you're playing the part, what with your name and avatar and all.
that was just in response to lucas ireneu's comment. which used the words perfect and perfection.
Sure cure, but the deal is not whether it's perfect or not. I just want him to test do something different, because doing his thing are really no deal for him as we can see. If he's trying to do something with a different style, it may be difficult and more of a challenge for him.
I don't know man,. To polsih piece just to enjoy my own reflection is hardly a motivation, but if someone find that approach pleasable for them - is totally cool. I do enjoy with doing, thats all it matters.
At this point you question sounds a lot like - why do you always scratch where the itch is, why don't you try to scratch other places.=)
I think that some people enjoy working with restrictions, but if thats not your thing, then maybe you shouldn't do it.
But yeah. You said in your post that "It might be boring, unpleasant and disliked by many" - But thats not the case with your work at all. When you ask anyone here who's the best pixel artist in here, or even the best pixel artist ever, the answer will likely be "Yuriy Gusev." or "Fool."
But even though your pieces are perfect, some of them are the same kind of perfection over and over. What I was trying to say is, that it would be great to see something thats still as good, but at the same time, different.
I agree that creating a mood is important and that if thats how you do it you shouldn't stop, but maybe you could try a different mood? [:
Thats interesting. How do you reason yourself to do things you not really enjoy?
I agree with the last line, but you somehow have reached the level of perfection already. Why not challenge yourself with doing something you wouldn't normally do? For example make a piece with mspaint palette, or do something unrealistic that you, and noone can make out what it is. Something without meaning.
My goodness, you make pixel art such a beautiful thing. The moment I saw the thumb I knew it was your work. I love the colors and when the terracotta pieces fall off of the statues and turn into golden figures it is going to be something to see. I cannot wait to see that!
Honestly, I trully believe art is always a field of personal discoveries, if someone else could relate to your work - it is a huge bonus.=) Do whatever pleases the audience is just feels wrong.
I can't say I know my way around colors at all, most of the time I try to create a mood, if it is not readable - I definetely fail to convey my vision, but as long I understand my choices - I would stand for it. It might be boring, unpleasant and disliked by many, but if I feel otherwise - just can't help it, it just works for me. Very same way I used to like other artists work for what it is, not for what it should be in my opinion.
Fool, I think that all you need is to try some new colours. Your level of detail is perfect, the picture itself is perfect, and while the colours are amazing they all resemble each other and then we end up getting boreed sooner or later, because hey, its amazing, but we have seen that before. I think "Seeder" was one of your best works, if not the best, mostly because of how the colours are different - the way you did it was simply perfect. I'd love to see more blues and reds in your works, some more saturation too. I realize that my art is thousands of times worse than yours and I'm in no position to say whats the "right" thing to do, mostly because there's no "right thing", and I wouldn't be able to do it myself if there were - but I think that I might at least be able to say what I (and probably some others as well) would like to see. And we would like to see more colours. [:
Thanks guys, I really appreciate your comments.=)
Elk, thanks for pinpointing those, I'll jump on it.=))
nehter, I guess shades close in value do the trick.
Noet, yeah I've got this a lot from my first wife, she wanted me to be reachier and taller. Funny, i wanted the same thing, but somehow it never happened, have to divorce eventually - couldn't disappoint her any longer.=) Personally I don't think I share the same approach. There are many of us - different in vision and style, thats what makes this place fun to be around.
Sure, this masterpiece is impressive in every way but still no piece of yours can satisfy me. All your works somehow resembles each other by color, style and feeling. What I want to see is something that's not you, something with same incredible level of detail but you won't know "this is fool", you'll actually be suprised and still impressed in same way.
I wanna be fooled.
Seriously Yuriy, I knew this was yours just by the small preview.
I'm such a big fan of Fool's art that I instantly knew from the thumbnail whose artwork it will be and said "finally, new piece from Fool" before clicking it ;) as always, pixel art at incredible level!
There are no words that I could use to praise this work of art, that could come even close to describing it's pure awesomeness. So I'm not even gonna try. Suffice to say, nice work!
How on earth did you make the clouds look so fluffy?!
I can't imagine how you put those clouds together like that. I absolutely love the rock ground. I'm going to be studying this for a long, long time. Welcome back!
really beautiful, fool. Lovely tale that went along with it as well. its size is just epic.
In the name of mighty forrest spirit - that is sooo amazing!
/me drools
Chrispy, the monk on the right has clearly 4 fingers visible. One of them is a thumb. One finger is hidden. Then the monk on the left has also 4 fingers visible. The hidden one is thumb. So they've got 5 fingers each hand. :)
none of the four fingers read as a thumb to me, so if he's got four fingers I just assume he has a thumb as well. the hand is tilting away from the viewer so the thumb could easily be concealed.
I hope by "Room for one last project" only means for this week.;__;!!!!
Good pixeling but i think it lacks volume in some parts, shadows and lighting being placed wrong :P
else, quite nice, also nice clouds, a little static but good, a better transistion would have made it better i think xD...
:) keep it up!
I love it - it's amazing. I have no idea what your expertise sees that escapes me, but I love the sky and hope you don't have to change it much! I would say that the realism in the clouds really snaps this picture into an almost three-dimensional focus, giving it a convincing scale and a believable sense of place, as well as answering where the beautiful lighting comes from (how did you get the colours of the sky and the statues to match so well - amazing!) that fills the picture so wonderfully.
This picture will always fill me with warmth and cheer - thank you, thank you so much!
@Chrispy: four fingers and a hidden thumb. quite natural.
I'll never look up at clouds the same way...
I'm sure everyone here at pixel joint was happy and laughing even before they read the story, knowing it was your piece. What a great come back!
Thank you very much for this story and the beautiful art.
Don't worry, I suppose I skimmed over your comment addressing monochromatic-ness before :P
Thank you good people for kind words.=)
Skamacore, agree on overdetailing, but could you explain please what color edit does?
TheInqusitor, clouds not fit, I would go for something more stylized rather then realistic. I added explanation to description on what it is, should do it from the start ...
As always, I'm speechless. I'd like to open your fan club :) .
Amazing is just a word compared to your art Fool :) .
Why re-do the clouds, Fool? What do you consider weak about that area?
Also, I agree with some of the sentiments from Big Brother. I think a few nice tricks to convey a huge scale would be to give the image more of a worm-eyed view and the higher you look up the statues, the more they fade out into the distance. You could also throw a few birds in to give us an idea of the scale. Plants growing off them would be funky too.
...of course, easier said than done.
The contrast on the monk's robes and on the rock at the bottom just kills me. I loves me some bold shading!
Amazing piece, I love every aspect. Such a large scale, I'm going to study the way you did it.
Oh what? I thought it was real for a second. xD
Those clouds... Wow.
Amazing size, double amazing pixel skills and triple amazing for the image!
Welcome back, wonderful piece and nice accompanying story. I hope this inspires a lot of people.
Some nit picks: I think you may have over-detailed with the stone texture, especially the one on the left's belly; it would have been nice to see something a little bit more subtle. But it still looks great anyway.
Maybe a splash of colour somewhere, as BB suggests. I made a quick colour edit. Also, why keep the pallette in the image?
Im with aniljp, the work of yours is legendary. Im myself pretty new too. Your works are a inspiration to us all!
