I know, I know, I just submitted a pokemon! And one of a far larger scope than these! But these have been my project for a while now, predating the Rayquaza piece.
A little explanation is necessary. On the top half of the piece is a little bit of context. Those are a number of the small chibi-ish pokemon I did at the beginning of last year. Now, aside from being a pretty good indicator of my improvement in the last 2 years, going over them gave me the idea to update some. It started with Giratina, the one that's the preview image, and I slowly have been progressing and making more and more.
The majority process of making them was to take a tiny sprite, either from the old set(like the Bulbasaur line) or quickly hash out a new one, like I did for Darkrai and Dialga, because the old ones of those were terrible. I've included the smalls for most of the updateded ones in the bottom half. So I double size them, fade them out by painting them over with 75% white, and blocked out sections by color. I included a number of the blocked out ones on the page too. Some, mostly Rayquaza, were just started at this stage. I then added the outline and shaded in, to get the final products.
A couple of extra notes. Palkia was terrible at first(you can see his color blocks at the right), but I later updated him, so he's much more Palkia-ish. The style is black outline, but no black inside the sprite, and a couple of shades per color, more or less depends on the sprite. I tried to share colors between the various pokemon whereever I could get away with it. Most of them are not proportionate to each other. My favorites are both Giratinas, Rayquaza, Dusknoir, and Mismagius. My least favorites are Uxie, Palkia(although he's better than he used to be) and Darkrai, mostly for the dithering on him. Sorry for the white space, but it is an enormous pain to make exceptions for all the little white spots in the sprites, and it's good for them to have a unified bg.
Not really looking for crits, but if you're going to give them, make them on the big guys, I'm not really interested in improving the small-scales here. I just wanted to share these because I like them so much. So enjoy please! |
Yes, his name is Rayquaza. Thank you very much, I was unsure of how some of the black outlines would look on the white bg. Rayquaza is one of my favorite pokemon, so I'm glad I was able to make him look cool :)
