Me and a couple of friends started playing Slash 'Em (a modification of Nethack, a Roguelike game) and I thought "Wouldn't it be cool to draw this game with NES graphics?"
The NES can display 20+ colors on the screen through both tiles and sprites, but since so many objects can be on the screen at once during a Nethack game, I felt it would be better to do tiles only which means no transparency on the icons. This limits me in my color choices, so I categorized the tile palettes as:
- Blue ramp: Dungeon tiles
- Green to white ramp: Hero, pets, and ally (not seen here) tiles
- Yellow ramp: Items, boulders, structures like fountains or altars, and rock walls (not seen here)
- Red ramp: Monsters
It might be interesting to do an entire tileset compatable with graphical versions of Nethack, but I saw that there's already an NES tileset int he works, so this mockup probably won't become tangible unless it's really popular or something.
EDIT: I just realized I forgot to place the stair tiles. Submitted a fix.
UPDATE 1: Added a 2nd screen showing Gnomish mines. The screen shows a Wizard hero selecting a spell. I added corpses and gems and a pit.
