Palette: 26 colors

A make-over of an older piece of mine:

- significantly reduced the amount of colors (from 77 to 26)
- reduced the contrast of the blue-purple color range
- fixed the most problematic banding areas
- created a brand new background

A blast from the past - the original piece:
fc08.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/226/a/d/S_C_R_E_A_M__by_TheoVision.gif .

This piece was awarded a Daily Deviation (2011-08-21) on deviantART:"If it comes to technique it combines good knowledge of portraying and one of the smoothest dithers I have ever seen. 26 impressive colors and a brilliant expression make this piece of pixel-art outstanding." You make me blush stOven...

st0ven (Level 2 Dealer) @ 4/11/2012 15:31

just had to come look at this again to remind me of what good dithering looks like ;)

TheoVision (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 11/10/2011 05:02

Thanks Jetrel!

Jetrel (Level 1 Intern) @ 11/7/2011 20:15

God that dithering just dominates.  Superb.

Hylst (Level 3 Enforcer) @ 8/13/2011 05:10

Like Helm said : A great mix of oldschool demoscene mentalite but newschool pixel tech !

I like it =)

Lackey (Level 4 Ensign) @ 4/26/2011 13:26

I don't know about this approach.  It's off in places and because of the style you've used it really stands out to me how you've 'stylized' the shading.  I think it's possible to be interested too much in form and not enough in the subject!  I don't know if fixing the banding contributed that much to the piece.

Geoglatico (Level 6 SWAT) @ 4/22/2011 08:31

very good, I like the smoothness !

Almir (Level 1 Rookie) @ 3/15/2011 23:10

the effect of light is great

iMoose (Level 6 SWAT) @ 3/5/2011 14:59

My favorite from you so far. I wish I could rate this higher than a 6.

Helm (Level 5 Detective) @ 3/3/2011 18:33

Much better! A great mix of oldschool demoscene mentalite but newschool pixel tech.

Falbel (Level 1 Rookie) @ 3/3/2011 11:41

Great improvement

Jv's (Level 1 Rookie) @ 3/3/2011 11:02

 OMG, very good

Victor Rojo (Level 9 Necrophiliac) @ 3/3/2011 05:36

yes, I love your Hex tiles and the two lighting on the face, and the atmosphere-clouds, perfect, and only 26 colors! I cant use dithering, but in your pieces works well, Fav my friend;)

|||| (Level 8 Marshal) @ 3/2/2011 14:53

Stunning. So much depth, I like little letters even

Riva (Level 6 Commander) @ 3/2/2011 11:27

Wow. Reminds me of the super big and super fine Amiga 'Scene illustrations.

luisniel (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 3/2/2011 08:51

What kind of machine are you? Awesome!

Gecimen (Level 11 Master Assassin) @ 3/2/2011 04:17

This is way better than the old piece.

Buddy90 (Level 6 Manager) @ 3/1/2011 16:46

Muuuch better. Glad to see you're making an effort to reduce the banding in your pieces.

vierbit (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 3/1/2011 15:53

Smooth piece as usual. The hex tiles surely make it more interesting to look at.
The shading on the nose looks a bit weird, seems there is a hole/crater(?) or was that intentional?

TheoVision (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 3/1/2011 15:37

I've been looking very critically at my pieces, and only want to display the best ones here at PixelJoint.

I revisited this piece simply because I liked it, but at the same time it never felt really finished. Furthermore I thought I could do it better, e.g. by challenging myself to reduce the amount of colors (proving - mostly to myself - that I can also create nice pixel art with a limited color palette).

As a matter of fact I'm currently working on something with a color count below 16 - which was always the minimal amount of colors I've always used...

elend (Level 3 Corporate Drone) @ 3/1/2011 15:28

Oh my god. It's really incredible. I mean the face was gorgeous before, but now with the new frame and background it's real class.

Jinn (Level 11 Godfather) @ 3/1/2011 15:04

{ Love it, Theo! Nice job! ^^

Marina (Level 9 Necrophiliac) @ 3/1/2011 15:01

Only 26 colors... you did a really nice job, but i still think that the old piece is really nice as well. Why did you repeat it reducing the amount of colors? I am just curious.

I love it

TheoVision (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 3/1/2011 14:17

Let's keep the fingers crossed Guga!

InjuredMan (Level 1 Rookie) @ 3/1/2011 14:11

Gugaknie (Level 5 Soldier) @ 3/1/2011 14:11

 Top 10 pixel art?

Darth Mandarb (Level 10 Operative) @ 3/1/2011 14:05

Rather quite beautiful!  Good job.  You have a real talent in making me think "this isn't pixel art" only to be disillusioned when I zoom in!  Very awesome.

Perihelion (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 3/1/2011 14:05

Yeah, I know what you mean. The new version definitely looks more unified. I dunno, I just like bright colors (says the person who never uses them in her art). But, yeah, great piece!

TheoVision (Level 8 Regional Boss) @ 3/1/2011 14:02

Thanks for the compliment Perihelion! I found the bright blue and purple colors a bit ...errr ... too bright...

Perihelion (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 3/1/2011 13:59

Hot damn, awesome rendering! I kind of miss the bright purple from the old version, actually. I love the hexes in the background too, and you have some spiffy lighting there.

eNerGi (Level 1 Private) @ 3/1/2011 13:39

Nice color using and very well made. realistic looking

miguli (Level 1 Rookie) @ 3/1/2011 13:36

 Wow! very cool.

JuninFC (Level 2 Hired Gun) @ 3/1/2011 12:02

ow good colors !
