 I agree with NobleValerian, you should use desaturated colors for the background, even fade them to white to give a little fogging effect (it really helps depth, because it's a real world effect).

Look this for example.

neat tho.

 looks good, but Karrisonk is kinda right... the strong contrast in the background draws a lot of attention.  A yellow-orange with an almost black... it's like the mother of attention grabbing!

 i love the character and the sushi but the background is not so good...
