Here's the edit:
I tweaked the delays again, the fall frames are no faster than 0.04", the 3 spreading frames are 0.03", then the vanishing frames slow down progressively again to 0.1".
Yes, I think more frames at the beginning would look nice, with also more space for the drop to form then detach and fall. But mostly, don't take my crits too seriously ;) I just wanted to give some pointers and I might have got carried away... You obviously have a good grasp of the pixel medium, so it's up to you in the end!
Here's an interesting link about frame delays and browsers.
Thanks. That's a lot to take in. lol. Well, I was attempting to make it look like the water was dripping from a ceiling, which is why I made the first few frames slow, but you're right, it's not quite an convincing as I'd hoped. I'm very new to making animated gifs, so I didn't know about the 0" thing. As for the art, I made it a long time ago before I thought about antialiasing. Obviously I thought the whole thing looked decent enough or else I wouldn't have submitted it to the gallery. I'm glad for the second opinion. If you did make an edit, I'd like to see it. Do you think I should draw more frames for the water collecting at the top, to get the effect I want?
I looked at this in detail in ImageReady, and I think it has some anim flaws, despite the overall niceness and fluidity.
The fluidity of the end is in sharp contrast to the jumpiness of the beginning. I don't understand why the first frames are so slow (0.5"), and why the drop moves by 2 pixels, and then the frames are faster and the moves drops to 1 px. I made an edit (I can't link it now, I'll do that in a few days) which works better by making 2 more 'tween' frames at the beginning (it could be possible to tween more by "subpixelling"), adjusted delays, and deleted 3 frames (n°s 10, 12 and 14) near the end of the fall to accelerate it. Frame delays are 2" for frame 1 (all black), then 0.1", 0.08", going down to 0.03" by 0.01" steps for the next frames, then all the rest at 0.03" which is the shortest browser-safe delay (at least for Firefox; you used 0" which is meaningless and confuses browsers).
I also deleted the least black frame which had a very loooong delay, possibly from a saving bug on my end.
Another thing is the drop could use AA in the corners, doesn't even need extra colors. As it is it doesn't look round.
I have a good grasp of art in general. When it comes to the pixel medium, I've only been self-taught until two weeks ago when I signed up here. :p There's a lot I never knew or took into consideration before. I really like your edit, it's a different effect than what I was aiming for, but it works. Thanks for taking the time, and thanks for the link.
