Great work! I wish if someday it will be game (yes, maybe for SNES, why not?) where we can play for this one-eyes villain.
Definitely a favorite. Thank you for the inspiration.
Amazing piece! Love the warm and cool grays. The candles add a lot to the mood. The adventurer character sprite gets a bit lost, I would deepen the blues of his clothes so they don't look so close to the floor tiles.
Thanks muchly for the positive feedback guys. Yeah, this one took a while. I should give a shout out to Jinn who gave me some helpful critique as it was progressing. The hardest part was settling on a palette. Once I had that sorted, the rest became simple enough.
The floor took a while. I hid the repetition by creating two 16x16 floor tiles instead of just one. For each tile I made about 5 progressively darker versions that eventually turned to that faded dark blue. To make the gradient to darkness by the outer walls, I just copied and pasted these different versions of the same tile into 8x8 pixel squares, steadily having the room dim to darkness. That cut down the time significantly! The candle light effects were added over the top.
DE: The outcrops along the bottom right edge were supposed to be where the rocks had interfered with the shape of the room. I tried to make it look like there were craggy steppes of rock. I'm not sure if I pulled it off correctly, but it was quite a tough job with the palette I'd left myself and because it was against the non-visible wall.
I completely agree with yours and others' criticism of the hero character though. He was the last part pixelled and I was running out of time. He looks shoddy compared to the rest. Not only that, but on reflection I don't believe he adds anything to the piece; if anything he detracts from it. I just felt at the time that it was an RPG scene and every RPG needs a hero. I may just remove him all together, which will also free up 2 colours, I believe!
I'm afraid to say that there's no hidden message in the border of the piece, I merely wanted to have a nicer finish than a big black square edge. Though there's no purpose for that design, I think the jagged edges fit quite nicely.
Thanks again and Merry Christmas Jams0988.
I have to agree with DE. But the rest is really awesome indeed.
The only two things I'm not fond of are the random squares on the... outcrops? in the lower left and the protagonist's sprite which is really sub par, you should've left him out. The rest is ace.
Excellent composition, i can almost hear the sound of... err... organ pipes?
Feels like a "deleted" scene from Secret of Mana/Chrono Trigger ... EXCELLENT!
I swear I can almost read something in the edging of the piece ... does it say something I'm just not seeing?
my favourite from this years secret santa. so yummy! .. floor must have taken ages!!
Incredible scene! I'm just not too keen on the characters compared to the background work. The lighting and piano are fantastically done.
this is just beautiful :)
tho i think the background edges is a bit distracting
One of my favourite from this year. Amazing atmosphere !
Every so often clicking a preview just makes my day...fav'd
Wow - This just jumped into my top 10 of all time - Beautiful!
this is incredible. Never seen pixel graphics look this good before
Nice work on the effects, great scenery, and a remarkable villain...
Damn what a beautiful piece! I didnt understand right away that the bottom left was the supposed connection to the cave wall, maybe that could have been emphasized by having some cave wall in the more visible parts of the circle. but still amazing! 6/5!
