--UPDATE-- 1/30/12

  • Removed excessive highlights and refined shadow definition for more depth
  • Revised majority of facial features for less banding
  • Some color editing

An experiment using NES colors.

Starting from left:

1) Monochrome, true NES restrictions
2) True NES restrictions (MMC5)
3) NES colors, outside hardware restrictions

 Now that I looked into it, it kinda looks like the squid boss. Darius Twin has neat-looking bosses!

I'm useless at explaining things. What I mean is that there's a lot of details fighting for attention here and the overall shading isn't doing enough to give much depth to seperate elements of it... ok not sure if that sounded right either.   I would use a darker tone if possible to use on the purple areas cos that blu-ish gray isn't really doing the trick.  There's some banding going on too.  Anyways with some more refinement you could still have all that detail but with less of it distracting from the rest... What works well in a large piece of non-pixel art may require a different approach when trying to reproduce in low color pixel art.  bleh I do really suck at explaining things. Just shoot me...

Carnivac - I really appreciate your feedback. However, I am having trouble understanding what you mean. Should I use less highlights on the face or make the outside of the face less detailed?

I like this but I feel for a detailed piece there's not enough shape and shadow definition to bring the focus on more important parts of the face.
