Mockup for a game I am making called Princess Quest.  Metroidvania type gameplay with single screens that scroll like La-Mulana.  I drew a lot of inspration from a lot of places including but not limited to Castlevania, La-Mulana, Kenneth Fejer, Paul Veer, Arne, and many others.  This is made with Arne's 16 color pallette.

p.s. game will be played at 2x res.  C&C welcome and appreciated.  Thanks.

@cure sorry I didn't actually update it till now and yeah I'll still probably play around with the hair color to see what fits best thanks.

@ECPixel and thinlikenate thanks a ton I'll start putting up the rest of what I have been working on and hopefully I'll have some kind of demo soon, though probably not much more than moveing around.

@everyone else  thanks for all the comments and advice hopefully with all your help I'll be able to make this game look nice.

I think that the background is too bright and contrast, it sticks out to the front making it hard to distinguish character and objects.

Except for this very nice piece.

Great retro style, but I do think the problem with the background is that it has the same colour values as the foreground walls. I have no problem distinguishing the character from the background, but I do think the background and the non-passable walls look too much the same. I'd say de-saturate the bg some more.

Othervise I like the colours and overall look!

character's hair is still very background-colored. Make him a redhead, problem solved. really lovely mockup though, very clean an crisp style.

cool thanks for the tips...  I thought the background blended too much and I just wasn't sure what to do.

EDIT - yeah I just tried out some darker colors on the bg and added a highlight and another shadow to the characters hair and it looks a million times better.  I'll probably post some other stuff for this game like animations and enemies soon.  Thanks again.

yes, use different palettes for character and background. You need some kind of importance scale, the more important something is the more contrast it should get. Not only in itself, but also contrast towards the background. You have a very saturated and bright background here, and the character too. I would give the hair of the character an additional shade for the hair (as highlight) and lower the brightness of the whole background.

Really cool, but the character blend too much with the background.
