@bobo - i didnt get the wrinkles right at first. and im not convinced theyre absolutely right even now. To answer your question, i neither used a reference, nor would i claim 'im just that good'. ive just failed at it a lot in the past i guess and now i have some vague idea of how to cheat it ^^. My only advice to you is simply this, if you cant draw it on pencil and paper, it would be silly to expect yourself to be able to pixel it.
@slym - the shirt folds below the ribcage only was an intentional point of detail. giving the shirt some relief with some lateral folds gives the impression its taught without being skin-tight. You may be right about the jeans highlights, but the intention there is the replicate that washed out , light areas of styled jeans around the thighs that are usually lighter than the rest of the pants. it wasnt intended to read as bright highlights. I could probably take another detail pass through to take out some of the rougher shading to make it more pixel precise.
@inquisitor - yes i do definitely need a tan good sir. i hope to get a bit more sun this summer than usual (which shouldnt be difficult to achieve).
How did you learn how to get the wrinkles right? I can never get them to look natural, but this is more of a problem for me in pencil-and-paper drawing. Did you use a reference, or are you just really good?
I really like how the shirt only wrinkles below his rib cage. I'm not sure if this detail was intentional, but it fits the pose very well. My only issue with this is that I don't think that your brightest pants color is necessary, especially when I look at the way you shaded his shirt. (And there is also a ton of banding in his leggs, which I've seen you do before so I'm going to assume that it was intended.) Anyway, awesome work :)
this is amazing! it reminds me about fulmetal alchemist
Love it but the folds on the shirt might be a bit exaggerated. It doesn't look like he is turning his body that much.
Nice jeans.
...nice sprite.
You need to get a tan, St0ven.
made an adjustment to the leg since it was bothering me as well.
"Come at me bro!" (someone had to do it >u>;)
This is really nice, love the colors you used.
There's a loose pixel between the index and middle finger on the bionic arm there. Also I agree with Christoballs, the left leg bothers me. I love the rest though. The colors especially
There's something about his left leg that doesn't seem quite right: I have the impression the thigh is pushing over the crotch area- this effect is probably due to the way you placed the highlights. Considering the character is leaning on one leg, I was expecting his right knee to be a bit further down compared to the left one.
Apart from these things, I like the way this is done! :)
Heh, yeah I still use Paint Shop Pro 7 (god it's ancient now but I just like it) for large sprites (though I use Pro Motion for smaller stuff or animation) though it seems no employer takes it seriously. Is Photoshop or nothing. Ah well. I'm not in that sorta work anymore so it don't matter.
I don't think anyone's ever called me 'wulvie' before. That's a variation on my old username I've not come across before. :P And I'm glad you entered this. I had hoped you would cos it seemed to be your kinda thing. I hope you do well. :)
ecpixel - i noticed them as well, thanks. i fixed it as well as made some minor tweaks that were bugging me.
Wulvie - i found your entry too inspiring not to enter ^^ - but to answer your question, i drew it in photoshop, but im going to save it out in PSP as well so that the palette is more pure. PSP's meager palette management is far better than photoshops, funny how that goes.
excellent entries from both of you :) this one should be a good one.
It looks very cool (as it should from someone as skilled and experienced as you) but what the heck program did you save this out in? When I tried to look at it in Paint Shop Pro (ok I was gonna have some fun and place him facing my sprite against a Street Fighter backdrop, hehe) the transparency was reeeeeally screwed up and had various blocks of the colors in places behind the character. Very odd.
Really great! Confuse a few red and gray pixels under the right elbow, and two gray pixel on the outlines of his pants.
too much perfect! I need this level....
