When I read this week's challenge, I got to thinking - what's much smaller than people? Bugs, right? So I decided to draw one of my favorite spiders, the Bold Jumping Spider.
I don't really like this palette, haha. Too many saturated dark colors! It makes it hard to add color to a mostly greyscale spider. I ended up adding in a brown color to try and break up the large areas of grey, and reused the dark teal of its mouth parts for a subtle underlighting to try and further give it color. I was shooting for a more realistic style at first, but I ended up stylizing it a little with the short, stubby legs... Bugs are really hard to draw accurately.
It looks like it has two legs too many, but the pair of short legs right next to the iridescent green mouth parts (chelicerae) aren't actually legs at all - they're pedipalps! They're more like arms than legs in that they're used for things like grasping prey while eating, etc. |
Cute spidy))
