This is just a loose project i've been bumming around on over the last couple of weeks. It just began for fun based around my old Zelda games on gameboy and I've added to it a bit by bit every few nights. Finished this map/mockup the other night, but I'll tentatively label it a WIP as there are a few more landscape pieces, characters and enemies that I'd like draw and add. It's been a bit of a challenge as it's the first time I've used a pallette of only four shades, but learning and picking up new techniques ever day ;)

This was partly inspired by 'Plagued - GB Challenge' by Jalonso (although this comes nowhere near his skill), and swiped the colour pallette from the Gameboy Turns 20 weekly challenge in April '09. Heres a reference image of the Link's Awakening DX overworld, so you can compare and comment. I was strongly inspired by the art style, but I made an effort to make this orginal..

Will maybe eventually program it into a game, but for now I'm just having fun drawing the tiles and building up a map! Heres a link to the original sheet of tiles I've done for this:

Hit us with some feedback - I know it might look a little full/overdone but I was just trying to fill all the space on the map haha, keen to know what people reckon :)

Cheers guys, I'm calling this map thing finished but I'm going to soon begin character/enemy design and maybe do a few more scenery pieces :)

Looks great.  I like the composition of tiles

I like it. Would be interesting to see some tall grass as well.

No... I drew every single tile myself, if you bother to compare them you'll see there's an obvious influence but they're original. I was basing it on my old gameboy games, trying to get a similar look and feel. The only pieces you should find close/almost the same would be the grass and the basic outline of the roofs, which for I tried to use originals as a reference. I can promise no ripping or copy/pasting went on, i've spent about two weeks slowly drawing and adding to this. If you reckon they're too close I can always have another shot at them..

Are you SURE you didn't just rip/copy the grass tiles?

Antiboton (Level 8 Odds and Ends) @ 8/11/2012 10:38

Is this totally original or are you using ripped tiles and sprites?

Muziak (Level 3 Enforcer) @ 8/11/2012 08:54

The idea was to create a tileset like the older games used. Kind of tried to emulate their repetetive style, but it's still a WIP, definitely going to be making more landscape tiles and things :)

Pokemon? Its nice but maybe the tiles could use some variation?
