I recently had the immense honor of doing some pixel art for the webcomic Homestuck.  This is one of the sets I did, put together into a mockup of sorts.  They appeared in Act 6 Intermission 3 (, though beware spoilers and the fact that it won't make any sense unless you have context).  It was a huge pleasure to work on Prospit and Derse: their mixture of architecture types, the various and intricate styles and most of all the towering spires have always made them one of my favorite elements of Homestuck.

The individual pieces are viewable here:  These aren't technically tiles so much as elements used by Andrew to make a single map image.  He is a very talented man, and definitely made better use of them than I did in this mockup.

Note:  I did NOT do the character sprite!  That is the work of Amanda H (, and is included for scale/context.

Edit: some small changes to the mockup based on comments.  Thanks.

Looks like a good mockup to me.

I always thought this looked so nice. It's really great. Congratulations on getting your work in Homestuck!

I really love the pink gothic style tiles.

I thought this looked great in-game; I'm glad to congratulate the artist directly!

Great job.  I wish I could have an opportunity to do something like this.

Voldimars (Level 6 SWAT) @ 9/5/2012 12:08

wow. I want to do something like this now )) I will try next. But isometric.

Thanks guys.

@Jalonso:  Thanks for pointing those things out.  I do plan to go through and make some adjustments (I put this together at 1AM rather than sleeping).

I should probably also note that the palette was provided.  I promise it looks better in context, and much better on some monitors than others (it seems to be an almost binary thing: either a reasonable purple or a super-vivid magenta.  I don't know why).

@Rayobatron:  Thanks.  Yeah, I didn't get the stairs quite placed right.  I may go back and see if I can make it look better (thanks for the edit on that).  The chest angle was also provided so it would be consistent with chests in other areas.

Rayovatron (Level 6 SWAT) @ 9/5/2012 07:24

The bricks are well made, the large carpet looks abit weird and the stairs doesn't look like are conecting with the second floor.  The chest angle looks wrong. Reminds me superstar saga.

My god that colour! It hurts!

The detail on this is great although the floor pattern is a bit distracting and stands out a bit too much.

It's good but the palette hurts my feelings

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 9/5/2012 06:00

Nice tiles. The floor seems very harsh against the sprite. Maybe the black could be another shade that softens the area like the darkest red?

You have missed an area on the biggest tower's right hand side.

Some stray pixels in the dark purples.

Missing black outline pixels here and there.

No comment on palette >.<

Thats a lot of magenta. Looks awesome though!
