Tribute to Journey (©ThatGameCompany)

EDIT 2: My attempt to improve the 360 effect is uploaded. The character is rotating (long work), and the lighting of the sky is changing a bit during the 360. …and some other tiny adjustments nobody cares except me.

EDIT 1: I improved it a little bit. Best dithering in the sky. Trying to simulate AA on the top of the hills with some mix between dithering and localized AA.
I'll try to improve the parallax 360 effect, or to replace it with simple scrolling parallax.

 Hey !

Waht an amazing piece !

I love this game, i love this pixel !

But, well, know that i'm not a pixel expert, however the perso-animation could be better synchronized with the camera movement.

See you !

(on Journey, i Hope :D )

Holy guacamole! Excellent work. Love the rotational effect.

user
johanvinet (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 10/31/2012 15:10

Thank you friends for all your great comments!

I uploaded a third revision of my piece. I adjusted some details and improved the 360° rotation (and not removed it, I'm pretty happy with that choice). The character is now rotating. Time to sleep.

Enjoy!

user
schminitz (Level 1 Rookie) @ 10/31/2012 13:55

It's a great job anyway, I vote 5!

user
Hapiel (Level 11 Bonsai) @ 10/31/2012 09:27

Your efforts turned out really cool, but it is sad to have to spend artistic time into mechanical time... :(

user
johanvinet (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 10/31/2012 09:03

@Hapiel: Sorry (for me), but it was by hand and with a calculator. :'(

user
Hapiel (Level 11 Bonsai) @ 10/31/2012 09:01

Great animation! Did you move all the layers by hand or did you have some proper tweening software? If so I would like to know what, I never found a pixel friendly animator!

user
zickzi (Level 1 Rookie) @ 10/31/2012 08:14

movie trailer...

user
WorldWithoutWords (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 10/31/2012 07:42

Fark, nice man.

user
johanvinet (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 10/31/2012 05:11

@schminitz: I'm ok with you. The character should turn. And you know what? Challenge accepted ;)

user
clefairykid (Level 9 Federal Agent) @ 10/31/2012 04:02

OH. WOW. :'''D Thats....got to be the single most impressive animation I think I've ever seen <3

user
Stickman (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 10/31/2012 03:07

I love this game and I love your pixel!

user
Ashkin (Level 8 Rear Admiral) @ 10/30/2012 23:24

My apologies, I didn't mean to imply that you had stolen this- I was just reminded of the other journey demake I saw. This is a great demake and I'd love to see it as an actual game.

user
johanvinet (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 10/30/2012 23:02

@ashkin: no Vincent here, sorry. I made a quick search on the TIG forum (Vincent+journey) and found out what you were talking about (you could have given us the link...). I don't know what you tried to say... And the "but" in your sentence may show that you've got some problem with that. My piece was handmade from scratch, and if you look closely, has nothing to be compared with Vincent's demake. I've already signaled 2 ripped pixelart on PJ, so I know what it is about.

user
Ashkin (Level 8 Rear Admiral) @ 10/30/2012 20:41

... Vincent? :/

It looks nice, but it really reminds me of a mockup posted a while ago on TIGforums by a guy who had some controversy around him (forget what it was about, ripping sprites maybe?)

user
dianinhas (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 10/30/2012 15:23

O.O WOW that musten taken days to be finished

user
Elk (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 10/30/2012 14:54

 OH MY GOD XD

user
BlueMagma (Level 3 Chief) @ 10/30/2012 12:06

This looks awesome! Great tribute to the series! ;D

user
schminitz (Level 1 Rookie) @ 10/30/2012 12:05

The problem I have is that if the character don't turn, I dont see a rotation.

But I really love your works. (cf your website) I don't know for how many times you do pixel art, but I really think you can go far :)

user
tuaarita (Level 4 Mercenary) @ 10/30/2012 11:19

 goddamn

user
Friend (Level 3 Hatchikyu) @ 10/30/2012 08:41

gotcha, thanks for explaining!

user
monotov (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 10/30/2012 08:28

o_O My gosh

user
beetleking (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 10/30/2012 07:59

This is too awesome for my eyes.

user
newGuy (Level 3 Enforcer) @ 10/30/2012 07:19

Wow, this is pretty much amazing!

And I actually like the rotation effect :)

user
johanvinet (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 10/30/2012 07:05

Ok everyone, thank you very much for your comments.

I agree I pushed that old piece a little to fast. I improved it a little bit (a lot in fact). You can found a link to the old one in the description.

I have no time yet but I'll certainly remove the 360° simulation and put some classic forward-parallax-scrolling.

user
johanvinet (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 10/30/2012 06:53

 Yes OK, it sucks. :)

user
schminitz (Level 1 Rookie) @ 10/30/2012 06:35

It's supposed to be a 360° rotation?

user
johanvinet (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 10/30/2012 04:47

In fact, it's a reversed parallax scrolling, to simulate a 360° rotation. But it's not as good as the one I've done with Flash. I think I'll do a normal parallax scrolling.

user
Mrmo Tarius (Level 10 Master Sniper) @ 10/30/2012 04:38

 HOLY PARALLAX SCROLLING, BATMAN

user
90s (Level 1 Rookie) @ 10/30/2012 03:51

 great idea! great work!

user
johanvinet (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 10/30/2012 03:17

@Friend Thx for your comment. I know there are some issues with this piece.

-> The AA problem is due to the paralax scrolling. I can't do AA on the top of the hills because of the different background colors during the scrolling animation.

-> Regarding the colors: I know the game offers a lot of wonderfull environments and color palettes but, my reference image was this one. I use those exact colors.

By the way, I'll try to improve it and maybe simplify the scrolling part of the animation.

user
sasuke91 (Level 2 Kukyu) @ 10/29/2012 19:46

great animation but should make the sand colors more golden. great game :D

user
skittle (Level 9 Nidan) @ 10/29/2012 18:39

Uhhhh... WTF YOUR AMAZING!

user
Friend (Level 3 Hatchikyu) @ 10/29/2012 15:02

the animation is jaw dropping.  So much so the rest pales in comparison.  The hills have inconsistent and fuzzy AA, and the colors and lighting are nothing special for a game so evocative in color and lighting.

user
blubberkopp (Level 1 Rookie) @ 10/29/2012 08:23

nice animation
