ups, I deleted the piece and now i think i can't update it...
Thank you for your comments jalonso.
I'm really surprised that kind of control about "true pixel". I understand there's a lot of pixel artists out there (myself in my weekly work) who work with RGB draws and then they just index the color. But my pieces exposed here are not worked in this way, just simply because is not the way I like work pixels. So, pixel purity is also important for me. It's easy to prove what I'm saying if you open my piece with photoshop and watch the pixels and the number of colors (Iris Toormix fire is easy to see that it has not been made by pre pixel effects, but frame to frame and I would add that her fierball has a very simple and basic pixel treatment). About Corb (crow), the piece here, I must say that thanks to all these users worried about colors number I realized that there was an error in the file (the color profile changed because my new screen and i did not choose the correct choice but the default one, change profile). So I update the picture and now it can seen it has 52 colors.
Please do not think anything here is rage...far from it PJ is very welcoming and approving.
The reason anything not pure pixels is an issue is because unlike other pixel related sites PJ leans heavy on the pure pixelling because the members are all pixel pushers themselves and we look at pixelart on the pixel level more so than art sites which have more than one style.
For example, this here piece would have gotten a far more positive reaction if all pure and using no form of transparency because when we all view art, we normally zoom in on the art (-+ under the art) and admire the pixels and the pixel clusters and color development, etc.
fyi, your portrait pieces and animation you submitted at the same time are wonderful and your skill is obvious...we like them and want you to be active here...you are very welcome here. I added this piece having read the 'gradient' comment so that it would not be the Mods that brought this up but instead so that it would be the community and thus you would get a better feel for PJ than having a Mod 'rage' on you ;)
Notice too that one of your portrait sprites (girl with fireball animation) has not be added yet. This is because it too has some CGFX that we'll call 'iffy'.
EDIT: Iris - Toormix has been added but it too may bring up a mild case of 'rage'...please note that this FX can easily be made in pre pixelart and just as effective and this is what makes other pixelpushers uncomfortable.
NOTE: For you and everyone. PJ is willing (and leaning) to reconsider using semi-transparencies over pixels when the piece retains total control and precision on the pixel level on a case by case basis. The reason we have frowned on these technicalities is because PJ membership consist of artists who just discovered pixelart to seasoned professionals and allowing 'hybrids' from the more skilled is detremental to the newer members who learn nothing about technique or fail to challenge themselves by simply throwing gradients and whatever CGFX. Its harsh but we've all sadly seen DA's pixelart section hurt by leniancy and simply wish to have a corner of the web where pixels remain pure.
anyway, I will check it out why it has so many colors. To be honest I think is too much, too. i think now there was some kind of error saving the file, like if it was saved as jpg (what was not) but colors multiplied i don't know why. I will restore it.
Haha, people on rage mode. Interesting. I was expecting something else from a site like this one...
I do not tried to blend anything and all gradients you see have been done pixel by pixel without any transparency. You can belive it or not. I couldn't care less. The reason why the piece has so many colors is because I wroked it without worring too much about colors, and probably I selected different colors that could be the same. The purple stripes are hand made as well and they are not example of anything of what are you trying to prove. Even her boots and her gloves are hand made too. You may not like my work, what i can understand perfectly, but do not try to lie just to degradate what I made.
And I did not try to mimic Street fighter new style because it's 3D. The style is inspired by The King of Fighters XIII characters treatment. A great work of pixel art I really admire.
And
That shading of yours wasn't handmade... the reason why your piece has so many colors, is because you overlayed stuff and set the opacity to some percentage with the belief that it would blend... it doesn't, it looks awful (example being the purple stripes on her middle-thing that is hanging)
and also the feet, else its an okay piece...though theres way too much banding going on, you obviously tried to mimic the new street fighter style...nice try though :)
and welcome
Gradients are hand made, not with photoshop gradient's tool (they are made with around 5-6 colors). It's the style I choose for this character, trying to give it a "3D" lighting treatment but all is hand made. I didn't know styles are censured here and everything has to have 2 colors of lighting (light and shadow).
Maybe 192 is too much. I'll try to reduce them and see how it looks, but I'm not going to change the style of this work.
About the thing with the neck DrD comments, you may be right. Neck is covered by a black choker, probably this is why her head looks like attached, but is not. Before add clothing I drawed her nude and she had neck! :D
The thing she has around her mouth is a metal beak mask, inspired on Tengu's mask (this kind of masks, japanese, are always beaks). Since she is a ninja and is very rare to see female ninjas with Tengu's clothing i thought it was a good choice to make her unique. But maybe is not clear in my work... I'll will try to improve it. thanks.
Very nice sprite. I don't think it has quite as high of a color count that you say it does?
Few crits though; I think you should shade the neck because atm, her head looks a bit unattached. Also, before I read the title I wasn't able to figure out what the thing over her mouth was. I read it as some sort of ninja-mask that was falling off her face at first. I would try slightly changing the shape/shading of it and probably change the bit of red string that keeps it secured to her face to a different color (reads as part of her scarf atm).
Welcome to PJ.
Where is the gradient? The Pixeljoint gallery is a pure pixel art site only so CG gradients are not allowed,k.
*Nothing wrong with hybrid pixelart but in order to keep everyone and everything on the up and up we don't allow impurities ;)
I really like the design on this, hope to see you remove the gradients.
Thanks. Colors could be reduced, but I worked the piece without worry about colors number. The sprite has some gradients, I guess this increases the number of colors.
The reason for that kind of control (anal) is just to keep the artform alive and true to its nature. We are always willing to discuss anything because we sometimes do make mistakes. If you decide to update this warrior then just use the 'edit it' under the art and then resubmit at the bottom of the page.
The Iris Toormix is waht we call borderline and are thinking of easing our hard line on. I did not realize it was pure and another Mod who instpected already added when I mentioned it before so its a moot point now. But, when a piece like that were to use some opacity changes and the result is the same as if you just used different 100% opaque colors sto simulate the 'fx' then this is what we are thinking of softening our stance on. Its merely a time saver just like using the 'fill' tool is the same as pixelling a huge area of a single color using the pencil too >>> same total control but a time saver.
Index paintings, btw, are not allowed here and someone always discovers this eventually. We call that cheating because in pixelart color development and control is such an important skill...
...anyhoo, anything at all that freaks you out ask me or ask anyone in the forum, the chatterbox or by PM. We really are friedly, helpful and rage free ;)
