It could be a matter of shading, outlines, contrast, or something else. I'm not a spriter, so take my advice for what it's worth. Contrast might be the main culprit.
The boy is the most readable. I definitely have trouble with the others.
The wheeled robot: can't make out the volumes other than the head and wheel. Is it one wheeled or 2-wheeled, with the visible wheel protruding forward? Is it bike-like? What are the grey and yellow parts?
Wizard: mostly ok except hands (folded arms?) and the thing on his head (tiara?).
Does the boy wear glasses? I just noticed.
Is the creature a bird? Guess I see a beak and feathers, not sure.
By comparison, your av is very readable, so I'm sure you can improve them =)
Also check those. I'll post more if I find any, I'm sure there have been some small sprites in the gallery recently.

I don't know what to tell you. The character sprites aren't cluttered or complicated. I'm not sure how you're having a hard time reading the details.
I do agree aboout the background, though. It was a last-minute choice, but I agree now that it was probably unnecessary.
...It's a girl. In a school-uniform. And she's not wearing glasses.
The robot has one big unicycle wheel, the yellow parts are grabby metal claws.
The "wizard" is God, and the "tiara" are big, fluffy eyebrows.
The creature is a Kappa, with her leafy hair pointed up in spikes.
