This was a big experiment with different styles. If I had the motivation, I would be giving those clouds some AA, but it would be hours of nitpicking and I've run out of steam for now. I've spent most of the christmas holidays working on this piece, I need to start something new before I lose my sanity.

Many thanks to H|F, DatMuffinMan, BottleGnomes, Mr. Fahrenheit, ScaryPotato, ADrawingMan and Du-Dzy for their feedback. As you can see in this WIP gif, they helped a lot.

@Insedeus: Wow, that's a huge compliment! I had a very clear vision for this, so I'm happy if I could bring some of that across.

@d9nis: Thanks! Ditto!

Insedeus (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 4/22/2021 19:02

It's so dreamlike and esoteric. There's nice pixel art, there's great pixel art, and then there's an even higher tier stuff like this that feels like it takes me someplace entirely different.

d9nis (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 8/20/2014 09:14

Ah Ah amazing exactly the kind of thing I love!

rhlstudios (Level 6 Hitman) @ 6/25/2014 11:51

Faaaaa-bu-lussss! Those clouds, I can look at those all day :D

CELS (Level 7 Lotus) @ 6/25/2014 00:10

Thanks! It's made from 100% real pixels :)

rhlstudios (Level 6 Hitman) @ 6/24/2014 16:39

Oh my, I quite like this a lot :D

Romson (Level 8 Cannibal) @ 1/8/2014 05:33

Hahaha! "Every fucking building in Russia totally looks like this", I can guarantee!

CELS (Level 7 Lotus) @ 1/8/2014 05:01

Thanks for your kind words, everyone :) I was expecting people would hate my clouds, so this was a happy surprise.

@Romson: I've explained everything here, for those who lack imagination

Romson (Level 8 Cannibal) @ 1/8/2014 04:35

Wow! Looks great! Who in sledge?

Storm (Level 5 Sniper) @ 1/3/2014 00:55

I really love this piece, especially the moon aha. Great work!

phraktol (Level 1 Rookie) @ 12/29/2013 15:57

I was also watching your changes in the WIP thread on the forums, i love how it turned out man, great work. I personally LOVE the clouds, they add a ton of character to the overall design. great work!

|||| (Level 8 Venus fly trap) @ 12/28/2013 15:24

Those clouds and that moon are really growing on me.

skittle (Level 9 Nidan) @ 12/28/2013 05:10

Quite amazing. There's a whole story that needs to be told here.

CELS (Level 7 Lotus) @ 12/28/2013 03:26

Thanks, guys!

@Jalonso: I don't mean the fact that they're Russian, but the fact that the way I've written "preview" with Russian characters doesn't really read like "preview" to a Russian. The reverse 'R' reads like 'ya' etc.

And the border was supposed to be more intricate, but I wasn't happy with any of the designs that I did for it. Waves, grids, stars, wood pattern, it all ended up looking too tacky.

shelin (Level 2 Corporal) @ 12/28/2013 02:59

I like version with arm lifted better, but still, amazing job

menagy (Level 3 Corporate Drone) @ 12/28/2013 01:24

I love the style and choice of colors!

Theoden (Level 10 Operative) @ 12/28/2013 00:24

Amazing mood and scene.

Shadow64 (Level 2 Hired Gun) @ 12/27/2013 23:31

Nice work! I was following the piece on WIP and I really like how it turned out. :)

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 12/27/2013 20:19

Why is the Russian characters being noticed a surprise. I took this piece to be inspired by miniature Russian enamel paintings and expected not just the Russian characters but even expected the border to be more intricate:/

Zizka (Level 10 Deep Blue) @ 12/27/2013 18:29

I just love those clouds.

CELS (Level 7 Lotus) @ 12/27/2013 15:47

@||||: Hahah, cheers. I was waiting for someone to comment on the use of Russian letters.

CELS (Level 7 Lotus) @ 12/27/2013 15:36

Thanks, guys! Means a lot.

@kuznetsowski: Cheers. I'm tempted to animate it, but... nah

DianaDiamond (Level 1 Rookie) @ 12/27/2013 15:29

really beautiful! this is something special

|||| (Level 8 Venus fly trap) @ 12/27/2013 15:13

pyaVIEsh! That's really cool Cels.

kuznetsowski (Level 3 Hatchet Man) @ 12/27/2013 15:01

If I may, I must say that the "commented" version is also pretty freaking epic and made me lol quite hard.

vimmel (Level 5 Detective) @ 12/27/2013 14:53

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 12/27/2013 14:09

I love it all.

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 12/27/2013 09:52

Awesome stuff, chap. I have always been a big fan of the impressionistic clouds, a real nice style.

CELS (Level 7 Lotus) @ 12/27/2013 09:27
 Thanks, guys!
@DatMuffinMan: Damn it. I knew I should have posted this version instead.
I suspect there's plenty about this piece that people will have different feelings about. When you try to create some kind of weird pixel art synthesis between Paul Romano's artwork for the Mastodon albums, mixed with the "A Night Before Christmas" children's book and Russian art noveau paintings by Ivan Bibli, people are going to have mixed feelings. I suppose it's not really the ideal challenge for someone of my low skill level either. Oh well
EDIT: This isn't an excuse to dismiss all criticism, I'm just explaining that it wasn't totally random. I wasn't high on acid when pixelling this, though I could see how someone would get that impression.

H|F (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 12/27/2013 09:19

I disagree,

The humans probably wouldn't even be able to see the magical being and moon watching over them.

The piece looks like it's a folk tale and invites curiosity and has a great whimsical flare that can be hard to balance, which you did well I believe!

Nicely done!

DatMuffinMan (Level 4 Mercenary) @ 12/27/2013 08:51

This is definitely pretty nice, but I think there's so much going on without explanation (random guy in the bg, distant moon with a face, horses, palace, etc.) that the piece becomes to confusing. Each individual part is done well, but they just don't seem to follow any particular pattern.
