Faces have more twists and turns and bumps than that one line of shading makes it seem. And the light on the hair suggests top while the light on the face suggests front. Try using big brushes to block out where you think color should be, keeping in mind lights and shapes.
Thanks for the feedback. Maybe I should start using some life references so I can see how light and form really are. Do you think taking a traditonal approach would result in a more realistic piece (starting off with guidelines and shapes first like with drawing?)
