I did a mock up a couple years ago of an Amstrad CPC-style RoboCop fangame and back in December of last year I decided I wanted to develop it into an actual retro game so here's how I'm doing so far.  It's very similar to the classic old RoboCop games but with all new graphics, music and some extra gameplay features and a bit more story.  It's set after the events of RoboCop 2 and incorporating aspects from RoboCop 3 and other Robo-stuff.  I'm making it in Game Maker: Studio and I have some actual CPC programmers who seem keen to build a true CPC version (aiming for the disk based, 128k machines but would like a cut version for tape based 64k machines) when I'm done making the GM:S one. Some graphics in these shots may not be final as this is of course a game in development and things do change for various reasons.

Game uses a set 16 colour palette throughout and is in the low resolution 160x200 wide-pixel mode (so the pixels are twice as wide as they are high).  Tiles are 4x8 (though of course look 8x8 here as they would be displayed).  These screenshots are meant to fill the screen like a proper game so bear that in mind and zoom in cleanly if you can.

Here's a link to a video of it but be warned it's very out of date now, having been uploaded back on 31st January but it shows that is indeed a real game in progress.  Yep.

And click here for an out of date screenshot but is actually being displayed on the real 1984 Amstrad CPC 464 and it's CRT monitor just to make sure it looks all fine.

And this link shows you a Game Maker Community post that has these two screenshots upscaled with scanline effect cos it just looks more 'retro'.

I know it's a rather niché project but hey I'm really enjoying doing this and that's all that matters. :)

Update:  Added the recovery room scene which mostly uses tiles that were created for the outdoors and OCP building areas.  Works well though.

There may have been some rare dodgy mode that allowed the CPC to use it's full 27 colour palette but if there is it's impractical.  Mode 0 uses 16 colours out of the 27 and is generally enough.  But what you're saying about the other machines is true.  The CPC doesn't have the colours per sprite or attribute issues that both the Spectrum and C64 had (in different ways) and it's possible to use all 16 colours on a sprite.   Which made it all the more annoying when you'd get CPC games that were clearly just ported from the Spec or C64 with absolutely no improvements.  Also I'm a big fan of the CPC palette itself.  I like bold saturated colours plus it also has a range of bright pastels too.  The level in the top screenshot was actually created to show it was also capable of grimy/dirty looking graphics as well.  Quite a flexible low-colour palette that wasn't used to it's full potential anywhere near enough back in the day.

Exceptional use of colour. Isnt it cool that the CpC didnt have sprite/scanline  limits like other machines and allowed to use the full 27 color palette? quite a feat. (if I am not mistaken).

Really vibrant colors and good use of sizes (but I like big sprites, as you know).

a pleasure to learn form you :D

Thanks.  Yeah, actually part of the reason I been doing this project is to prove the CPC could also do dark and dirty as well as bright and colourful.  It's a very flexible palette for an 8-bit computer that most of the time wasn't used to it's best.   Have really enjoyed doing this project so far.

Super nice, you're really pushing what is possible to do with the CPC specs. I've always been a big fan of the CPC colours as well, so bright and cheerful.

Nice to know the old graphic specs can still appeal to people who never had them. :)

Great project. I'll have to keep following it. I never had these older machines, but I like the look of them.

Thanks.  :)

I wouldn't know how to add those filters though.  Those are for C and C++ and I'm making this in Game Maker: Studio.   I've got various lil scanline options and also looking into other shaders for more accurate CRT simulation in the shader part of the Game Maker forums but it's not a priority at moment til the game is in more of a complete state.

Just awesome, brings me back. This would've been right at home in old game mags I read as a kid, and I would've been so jealous of CPC guys, being a C64 guy myself.. ;) If you want to make it look more authentic on a PC, you could try ntsc filters out for some delightful dot crawl and color bleeding. :) http://slack.net/~ant/libs/ntsc.html

I already told you, but I'd love to play this game when you finish it. I also gonna tell to somebody who is a huge fan of Robocop (as we do) to do a good gameplay at 1 credit haha

Very nice!

Yep. It's in some of the old games but also the films. Basically just means health.

I like the efficiency stat.  Was that part of any of the games before?

Also, thanks for posting a link to that forum, I'll be checking it out thoroughly.
