An artist in pain!

----

I had a nice conversation with CELS about palettes that are far from ideal for specific kinds of genres.

I was inspired and wanted to challenge myself.  Pixelling a face with very bright and unsuitable portrait colours. It is intented to look like someone dropped these colours on the ground by accident.

The only way I could make this work has been with very hard rim light for at least one half of his face. I also wanted to make him look like that he is in pain because the cyan and the green gave me headaches during the first stages of the piece. :)

Happy new year, everybody!

This palette is spunky, I like it! Good job using it well!

De Niro? That's amusing.

Thank you very much.

I see a young Robert de Niro but whatever... both concept and execution of this piece are great!

Thanks a bunch, Bobston!

Highly saturated colours work very well against black

Pretty much the same colours we had to use in school, do you remember those?

Very nice! Interesting how the almost black harmonises the other colors

Mandrill (Level 9 Vice President) @ 1/3/2015 08:58

Thank you very much, CELS!

The basic shape of every blob is, of course, determined by the face, but the sides that go into the dark are just randomly painted. I pretty much went wild with my mouse and tried to AA it as best as I could.

I originally intented to add silhouettes but realised pretty quickly that this would have been too distracting.

user
CELS (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 1/2/2015 17:41

To me it looks more like Clive Owen :)

Great stuff, Mandrill. Gonna fave this just for a lesson on how to draw amazing photorealistic eyes and mouth at a tiny scale. Just fabulous. My only personal dislike is the shape of the three colour "blobs", because I feel like they're rendered in a very random way. They don't look like paint on the ground, or broken glass or ripped paper or anything like that. But maybe you made it unnatural like that on purpose, because you're so artsy, who knows :)

user
Mandrill (Level 9 Vice President) @ 1/2/2015 13:54

Haha, cheers! :)

@ Rainbowtato

Cheers! Cool you like it.

Mandrill (Level 9 Vice President) @ 1/1/2015 13:04

@ MasterSky

Thank you very much!

The carmine is actually darker than the red, ideal for AA.

Are you refering to the flesh tint? I didn't use that with the red. :)

user
Mandrill (Level 9 Vice President) @ 1/1/2015 13:00

@ Muffin

Woha, that is an incredible compliment, thanks a ton! :)

user
Rainpowtato (Level 1 Depressed) @ 1/1/2015 11:37

Awesome.

user
MasterSky (Level 6 Yonkyu) @ 1/1/2015 10:48

the face is actually very well done! but the AA on the red splatter at the bottom doesnt really work because it's a bit lighter than the red.

considering the palette you did a great job haha!

DatMuffinMan (Level 4 Mercenary) @ 1/1/2015 09:12

I see Dali :)
