This is my submission for #pixel_dailies on twitter theme was #megaman. It was difficult to come with this out of the blue. But it was good practice nevertheless. Hope you guys like it.

------- Edit -------

Based on TrojanMonkey's suggestion of the hair, I changed it a little bit. And posted it in the original resolution. Older one is available here

Of course, everyone has their own unique style! I guess I just converted the sprite into more of my style to show some ideas that can be useful. Glad it was helpful!

And about the teeth, I think it's just that small details like having missing teeth is much harder to convert into pixel art due to the limited canvas you'd be working with. On my version I decided that instead of showing teeth on the top and bottom of the mouth, just having a row on the top with gaps shows that he has missing teeth but it's not needing to use so much space to show the whole set of teeth.

Hope that makes sense, sometimes I'm not good at explaining these things ^^;

Glad you remembered to post your critique XD

Well, as it stands out, your pixel art style is completely different from mine, so I might take what I find interesting and suitable for this style (I'm not trying to critique your work, I'm just trying to gather what I think it's best for his piece)

- You might be correct about the hair. I might work on one more iteration for it

-  Regarding the white. I think some of the were suitable, like the underwear and the holster. The helmet felt a little exaggerated for this particular piece that I worked with, I might take that into consideration if making changes. But I have to agree, the white is flat.

-Yep, that's one problem that I have when making stuff that belongs to a curve. But thanks for  pointing it out and correcting! The arms look much better.

- My friend also asked this question and I thought it'd make sense. The cartoon mouth has an outline, but this is pixel art and... yeah, I might drop that outline. I wanted to make lips, that's why there's an outline, but it might work better in and out.

- You mean replaced by others in the same palette, right? This one is a little difficult for me to imagine just by looking at your piece and comparing it.

- The AA is definitely something that I need to improve.

Thanks for the comment! It helped a lot. The only thing that me and my friend thought that was weird in your piece was the teeth placement. He has stray teeth like I showed in this piece. Is this so bad to people? O.o

I saw this sprite the other day and thought of some criticisms...then forgot to post them, oops.

Anyways, I played around with this sprite while I was bored as I liked what you had so far:

And the things I noted;

-the hair would stand to work better as a large clump together with shading to indicate that there are seperate strands within the sprite

-the white looked too flat as the shades were not showing up well. infact the shading overall should be more defined.

-there were a lot of pixels that were just straight lines, especially in the arms.

-why does the mouth have an outline, but the rest of the sprite doesn't? Either give everything an outline, or only the outside.

-You could potentially remove some colours as they could be replaced by others, such as using the darker skin shades for his tongue and the red of his outfit for the mouth

-some AA could be used in places such as the hat or  body

That's all I can think of for now, hope this helps!

@Lone Scout

Totally agree with the weapon. I might work on another iteration of this one just because of it. As with the body, I tried to work with the limitation of three tones of red (being one of them the original tone of Zero), but I'll experiment around to see what if it looks cooler, I know the new hair color looks better.

Thanks for the comment!

Lone Scout (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 3/25/2015 22:13

The shading is very subtle where it should count - mainy the character's body and his sword. You should make the weapon a little more "sharp", and his body given more contrast to make him stand out.

Besides this, it is compositionally sound.  The pose manages to be dynamic without being exaggerated.

Thanks a lot for this critique.

"no point making individual teeth at that res, just draw one line of white or don't do anything at all."

Regarding the teeth, I was inspired by some of the art of the show and mostly what kuso said made sense, he has those broken teeth, they seemed to fit so well with the character that I just left there. Most people (non pixel artists, common people) noticed the teeth as  something positive and recognizable for the character. On the other hand...

"Imo, drop the lines on the hair. One of the first lessons regarding hair is not to treat it as individualistic strands, instead -- look at it as one group with mounds and valleys"

is totally valid for me and I truly accept the changes you've made to the hair. It improved a lot. Hair is always a problem for me when pixeling. (or even making drawings on paper.) So I'm updating the pixel art based on your suggestion. And I'll definitely check about negative space. Thanks again for the comment!

Edit: small typos

giordanno92 (Level 1 Thug) @ 3/24/2015 15:11

Yeah. That was my first thought when I decided to make this crossover. Thanks for the comment!

kuso (Level 1 Rookie) @ 3/24/2015 13:10

If I recall correctly, there are only 1 or 2 episodes when you see a glimpse of Finn with a full set of teeth, and it's apparently an error.

TrojanMonkey (Level 1 Private) @ 3/24/2015 13:00

They pretty much decide by random when he has a full set of teeth and when he's missing a few. But even if he misses a few, it's nothing like missing most of his teeth.

kuso (Level 1 Rookie) @ 3/24/2015 11:59

"no point making individual teeth at that res, just draw one line of white or don't do anything at all."

I'll assume you just don't know Finn's character. He does have broken teeth.

TrojanMonkey (Level 1 Private) @ 3/24/2015 01:19

I'll merely write jabs, tired and all.
* no point making individual teeth at that res, just draw one line of white or don't do anything at all.
* Imo, drop the lines on the hair. One of the first lessons regarding hair is not to treat it as individualistic strands, instead -- look at it as one group with mounds and valleys. People generally only bother to add the highlights and shadows. I personally did something similar.
I'm no pro at hair, I actually suck at it most of the time. But it is easy to suggest to avoid such practice.

Something like this?
I scribbled something for a few minutes (the shading in the example are extremely exaggerated)
Also, if you want to learn more, go read about Negative Space.
I fucking hate negative space.

kuso (Level 1 Rookie) @ 3/23/2015 23:13

It makes sense. Finn *does* have long blond hair.
