So when I saw this week's challenge, I immediately thought of a sunset beach kind of setting for this. Around the same time, I also had plans on remaking a scene from Pokemon Yellow that also had a beach setting. I decided to merge the two things together to form this. And as an added bonus, I decided to make this into an HD piece since there's no size restriction for this challenge. You can see the WIP of this here.

Working with these 4 colors was a bit challenging, but having worked on other pieces that used the Gameboy's 4-color palette, wiether by pixel or by pen, this wasn't really a problem for me. This was also a first where I tried out the index painting technique demostrated by Chasm co-developer Dan Fessler; that technique was used for the sky and clouds only. The rest was all pixeled by hand.

I originally wanted to make this whole thing animated (such as making the ears and the tail move from the breeze, the same goes with the palm tree leaves and the ocean), but unfortunately I have family coming over this week and I probably won't have the time to get that done. So I'm posting this as is.

This was all done with three programs: GraphicsGale, Pro Motion, and Photoshop (for the index painting).

EDIT: Thanks to Finlal's critique, I fixed the sun's reflection to its rightful position.

I love the dithered gradient in the horizon/sky! I honestly had to take a closer look to see if it was REALLY only 4 colors!

skeddles (Level 11 Sphinx) @ 4/27/2015 09:48

Stronghold257 (Level 2 Tulip) @ 4/18/2015 14:32

I thought the colors on the palette were atrocious. You proved me wrong.

Eggy (Level 5 Detective) @ 4/18/2015 11:51

Awesome! This gets my vote  I hope it wins!

king_bobston (Level 10 Capo) @ 4/18/2015 10:47

This is a perfect fit for the palette! Quite a smart fit and well executed.

AceThePixel (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 4/17/2015 17:32

Oh My God

MVegum (Level 1 Seaman) @ 4/17/2015 16:23

i think i just found the master of dithering. omg this piece is amazing, i'd wish i was that good

glasses (Level 1 Rookie) @ 4/17/2015 12:36

You have a very impressive focus and attention to detail

cure (Level 11 Bonsai) @ 4/16/2015 15:51

good choice of imagery given the palette, probably the only entry thus far that doesn't seem unnaturally garish

Trick17 (Level 8 Venus fly trap) @ 4/16/2015 15:33

Really good usage of the palette, well done.

Paddy (Level 3 Hatchet Man) @ 4/16/2015 13:50

Absolutely wonderful piece, might I suggest putting a bolt through the yellow circle on the board? Something like this maybe? i'm sure you can do a much better job at that than myself, either way the piece is great as is.

Voltali obscur (Level 9 Boss) @ 4/16/2015 11:43

Aaaah so much nostalgy...
A truly great idea for the wc (AND you managed to post a popular pokemon theme piece, which is sort of an exploit here on PJ ).

One other little nitpick I'd like to add to what Mandrill said, is that some parts seem to lack of aa, specifically the red outline on the back of pikachu's head and left ear, where it's next to the yellow reflexion.

BathMaster_2000 (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 4/16/2015 10:09

That doesn't look like 4 colors...

Wait a second...

amazing dithering.

TheTalentedHero (Level 1 Intern) @ 4/16/2015 08:40

He won... no point in trying anymore...

aldiansolkai (Level 1 Private) @ 4/16/2015 07:55

Holy shit is this impressive.

fawful (Level 6 Yonkyu) @ 4/16/2015 07:28

That gradient in the background is really doing things for me.

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/16/2015 05:57

Brilliant entry!

Huge pieces like this are always tricky to do with a limitted palette And. you even managed to create something this expressive with just 4 colours, amazing

One nitpick though.

You didn't anti-aliase the pink colour  at all, which makes the highlights on the board look a bit edgy. Orange is usually ideal to anti-aliase red as well as pink.

Finlal (Level 11 Special Agent) @ 4/16/2015 05:18

As far as I know, you can update it before the end of the week.

Jackster (Level 3 Private Eye) @ 4/16/2015 04:17

Oh wow! You're right! After looking through a lot of sunset references, that never really occurred to me.  (That and I was also using that Pokemon Yellow pic as reference as it did the same thing too)

I should fix that right away. Is it still too late to edit this since I've already submitted?

Finlal (Level 11 Special Agent) @ 4/16/2015 00:49

This is so great. Only complain - sun reflections on the water don't work like that. It should be straight line from sun to the camera.

RolandMelvinZ (Level 4 Button Man) @ 4/16/2015 00:40

Awesome ways D: I didn't think it can be as good as this one with only 4 colors.. great job!

Naji (Level 2 Hired Gun) @ 4/16/2015 00:23

dami1310 (Level 5 Detective) @ 4/15/2015 22:48

One question: HOW THE FUCK!?

Mega_19 (Level 6 Manager) @ 4/15/2015 22:21

wowowowow! and only 4 colors! you are totally amazing

Ubisavis (Level 6 Made) @ 4/15/2015 21:05

wow it so awesome, very good use of a limited pallette :D

CELS (Level 7 Cuttlefish) @ 4/15/2015 20:16

Great work! The AA is quite impressive. :)
The thing that sticks out to me is the back of Pika's head, where the yellow line is broken.
