Green, pink, black? That's all I ever need.

MSpaint. Didn't save as *.gif or anything, and I've never seen this happen with rescaling a selection (of course, rescaling the image will interpolate). Not sure what caused it, not reallt interested in figuring it out either =P

PixelSnader @ 4/16/2015 13:02 commented on Pandalicious!

Hm that is extremely weird since I used the challenge palette image and the colorpicker only. But you're right that image does have more than 4 colors. Heck, the 4 bright pixels on the bottom of his foot are all a different shade...

I've updated the image by hand replacing each color with a grey and then back to the 4 correct colors. Hope it looks okay now...

Nope, not a goomba.

And yeah. I pretty much always want my pixel art to be scaled to at least 200%. Modern screens are too high res for pixel art to be interesting at native resolution, IMO.

PixelSnader @ 1/12/2015 06:54 commented on Apartment (Pixel Dailies 12-11-2014)

Well I actually run windows 8.1, and generally have rather minimalist backgrounds (currently this) but I wanted to pixel something more recognizable. The right hand screen shows this, by the way.

Yes, fuzzy dice, but those are not part of the 5 toys I meant. The mushroom lamp and pacman plushie are. There are two more plushies (they're not that hard to recognize I hope) and my Nexus 7 box.

PixelSnader @ 1/12/2015 06:43 commented on Modular trees (Pixel Dailies 3-11-2014)

Sure, but then it'd be exponentially more tiles. Or just a palette swap if it's a seasonal thing =P

My goal was to create a system to have similar looking but slightly varied trees; to make a consistent forest that still feels natural instead of cut and pasted sprites. Which kind of worked but not quite as good as hoped.

Look up what "mentior" means. ; )

Neither the birds nor the isles exist, but I like to make up backstories. Also, I was wondering if it were credible enough and people would try to figure it out. Mission accomplished. =P

Maybe. What makes you think it is?

user
PixelSnader @ 11/17/2014 15:25 commented on Zelda Tingle Demake (Pixel Dailies 12-11-2014)

Yeah I wanted to do something slightly different from the standard black bar with white letters you see in so many NES games.

And I figured that it wouldn't be that hard to make something like this work. I'm not 100% sure the current design would work great on a NES but I kinda ran out of steam and didn't want to spend too much checking feasibility of it so I just threw it together. On the right side there would be different items to select, like the sword or boomerang. The idea is to have it be integrated a bit better with the character you play, compared to just highscores and icons. Put the role-playing in RPG, so to speak.

I don't know if there's a weekly challenge on Pixeljoint. I made this for a daily challenge thing over on twitter. I can't quite make something every day, but having regular short projects helps keep my skills fresh, and my motivation up.

You can follow the challenge account over at https://twitter.com/Pixel_Dailies

No, I mean differentiate the gun, the barrel, from the hull and the cover.

Good use of few colors. Though I do think the ramps themselves could be a bit better.

I really think you ought to make the gun a different color.

user
PixelSnader @ 8/15/2014 18:53 commented on R32 Nissan Skyline GTR

What's going on with the AA is this: some areas (black line on light grey) have enough intermediate colors for regular AA. Some areas (all those that JustinGameDesign circled) are only one shade apart, which means you don't have any AA colors; and there you use "dither AA". It's not a super common technique and it comes with a lot of obvious caveats, but sometimes if the contrast is low enough or your subject is supposed to be rough (e.g.  this machete) you can get away with it.

I don't like this piece, think it wastes a lot of space and is kind of sloppy with AA, but it certainly looks handmade to me. The linewidths on more complex shapes (chairs) vary a lot, the sharpness of AA is quite inconsistent, and almost nobody can make a good round circle (these headlights are rather octagonal).

I don't think this should be rejected as "not pixel art". However, I do think that the artist should ask themselves why they aren't using vectors for this.

-------------------------------------

As for a general comment on using shortcuts: it's the endresult that matters. An example would be this woman. I took a photo, scaled and collorreduced, then did a few cycles of cleanup&mirroring, and then used the spraycan and pencil scribbles for the hair. The hair is messy and unfinished, yes, but the face is unmistakably handcrafted.

They're not cheats. They're tools to turn 2 hours of work into one hour.

I kidnapped myself! I will hold myself ransom until you give me one... Googol Dollars!

I should probably switch back to a more recognizable avatar, though.

@Balamoot - that makes sense, yeah, but that would mean the 'rainbow' doesn't flow nicely anymore. Or at least, it'll break the balance a bit.

@bastien - haha, no. In fact, he's got four eyes. He's wearing glasses.

PixelSnader @ 2/19/2012 03:26 commented on Luigi

This method is rather fidgety for advanced use. It will actually use all the pixels in the image so you can't later edit it to put a logo there, and changing colors can break things too. That's probably why StickyTape's gives issues.

This was a fun diddle, though:

How do I embed an image?

Does new mean actually new, or just an original character? Example: I've made sprite Snader before, would it still be allowed?

PixelSnader @ 1/9/2012 04:03 commented on Kwame

Would we also be allowed to mimic the style and colors but slightly changing the subject. For instance using a whale instead of a shark?

user
PixelSnader @ 1/6/2012 20:20 commented on sndr avvy, green

I probably wouldn't have minded much if it didn't make it because it's just an avatar - on the other hand, it DOES represent me, so it's a fairly important thing. Either way,  I think it got accepted purely because of my name and history on the site.

I agree that this might not be worthy of being a completely new piece, but I'll explain why I did this. The blue version was made for a red vs blue challenge. Updating that to a green color would break the entire intention of the piece. While this one is merely a tweak, I felt like I had to keep the original (blue) intact.
