Crocodile Hunter dies

Steve Irwin, best know for his TV role as the Crocodile Hunter, was killed on a diving trip Monday by a sting ray. He was 44.

He was a great guy. When someone with such vibrancy is said to have passed away it really makes you feel quite empty. I feel so sorry for his family.

I like how his death is basically only the fifth event in modern history [Moon landing, John F. Kennedy's death, Princess Diana's death, 9/11] to beg the question "Where were you when x happened?". I've been asked the question numberous times, and it just shows how much of a difference he made in the world.

I couldn't believe it when I first heard the other night. Not to be funny, but I always thought if he was going to go it would be by a croc.

@sedge: Apparently it was a freak, 1-in-a-million hit that actually pierced his heart. I guess this amplified the effects of the venom. I'm going to miss the crazy guy. His was the best nature show ever.

Man, this is beyond sad to me. I have the "Crikey" from the movie set up in my room and I always loved his work, because of him I'm a smarter person and know a 1,000 more things than anyone I know. One of my dreams was to work for him... I have friends who want to make stingrays (and know where to go) and kill them but I tell them "Steve died doing what he loved and did best. He always wanted to help animals, you should do the same" But it almost seems "Unreal" its so hard to imagine a world without him...

Damn, I didn't realize a sting to the chest could be lethal. Definitely an entertaining fellow... his adventures with poisonous snakes were hilarious.

I always found it ammusing that he wore those same khaki short short everywhere, no matter what. This is one celebrity death that caught me off guard.
@Carl: If you're asking what he was known for, he did documentaries, tv shows, etc. about exotic and dangerous animals. Rather nature-educational sort of stuff.

Strange thing is... those buggers are shy... and diving up here in the Great Barrier Reef you see them but normaly just the tail of them... they are gone before you get close...

It's a loss and all over the news here... The low isles are about an hour off and they airlifted him into Cairns for autopsy... Getting stung by one is bad luck - right in the heart is incredibly unlucky...
