Pixel Art Challenge: Game Boy Turns 20

News Details

Last week was the 20th anniversary of the release of the Game Boy in Japan. To celebrate we want you to create your own original Classic Game Boy game. This means an original game that did not exist.

Your challenge entry must include the title screen and at least one in-game screen. You may include extra in-game screens if you want.

Canvas Size - 160 (width) x 144 (height) per screen. Make sure you submit all of your screens together on the same canvas. Minimum 2 screens.
Colours - Use only colours from the provided palette (you may also use transparency between screens):

Transparenecy - Optional. Only use transparency between your screens, as stated above.
Animation - No.

 NO DEMAKES

Nintendo's Original Gameboy used 4 levels of grey only. This challenge is a celebration of the Gameboy. The palette is 'look and feel', some screens are yellower, others realm into ochers and browns. Just work with this green, k.

The challenge thread will have all the challenge updates. The thread is also a great place to post your WIPs.

wow, I didn't expect this many entries for this challenge.=)

smk (Level 5 Sniper) at 5/3/2009 7:14:13 PM

Ah just in the nick of time!

Reo (Level 11 Sensei) at 5/3/2009 1:18:28 PM

You can't pixel something on the site, you'll have to draw it in paint or some other drawing program and then upload it here.

tleit004 (Level 1 Rookie) at 5/3/2009 1:06:01 PM

How do i create the pixel art onpixeljoit/here

Zenobia (Level 1 Depressed) at 5/3/2009 12:14:49 PM

Damn! I can't finish in time to enter.

Well, I wasn't going to win anyway. I'll just post it some other time, without the time-pressure.

I really LOVE seeing all these entries though.

smk (Level 5 Sniper) at 5/2/2009 3:37:50 PM

Mines halfway there, hopefully I'll get it done before the deadline!

Squirrelsquid (Level 4 Shichikyu) at 4/30/2009 6:46:03 PM

it is indeed awesome- I have something in the works too ^-^

fawful (Level 5 Rokkyu) at 4/30/2009 11:22:48 AM

This challenge is too awesome.

Stickman (Level 5 Detective) at 4/28/2009 3:27:24 PM

Some major good stuff going on in the challenge thread!

ThereIsNoCure (Level 11 Godfather) at 4/28/2009 3:15:06 PM

Christ you guys.  You'd have to be completely braindead to think "your own original" meant anything other than what it says.  It took about 3 seconds for half the commenters to find a loophole.  Use your brain and try to figure out what the writer of the challenge is ASKING for, not what technically works due to an argument based on semantics.

skeddles (Level 11 Psychopath) at 4/28/2009 1:05:23 PM

great challenge

jiipm (Level 1 Rookie) at 4/28/2009 11:17:58 AM

"but could be...say black (the 5th color - but not used in screens themselves, just a seperator.)"

That´s what I wanted to know.

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 4/28/2009 10:22:47 AM

Well transparent BGs between screens are the best, imo, but could be...say black (the 5th color - but not used in screens themselves, just a seperator.)

yrizoud (Level 3 Private Eye) at 4/28/2009 9:13:10 AM

I think the goal is really the 160x144 mockups, transparency is expressly allowed so you can then arrange them as you prefer, vertically, horizontally, etc. and let the user choose his BG color with the pj theme.

jiipm (Level 1 Rookie) at 4/27/2009 11:52:07 PM

How about the whole layout? I mean when I have an intropicture and two "screenshots" then can I have frames for it i.e. using the darkest color on that palette?

Dr D (Level 2 Kukyu) at 4/27/2009 10:25:02 PM

It's not my place to say, I know, but I don't see what the problem would be, as long as you wait until after voting.

Although you probably wouldn't get the recognition you want, waiting until a week after you submit it, to edit it and add animation.

MFlanaga (Level 3 Chief) at 4/27/2009 9:33:25 PM

yeah, awesome challenge... can i enter a static piece and then edit/animate it after the challenge is over and done?

BlackDragon (Level 11 Godfather) at 4/27/2009 3:24:46 PM

I have the perfect idea for this :DD

<3 you guys for the mockup challenge.

Zenobia (Level 1 Depressed) at 4/27/2009 1:08:50 PM

Awesome! Ooh I really hope I can enter this time.

skamocore (Level 11 Psychopath) at 4/27/2009 12:56:00 PM

Yup, no animation this time. Think of this challenge as a bunch of screenshots you'd expect to find on a website like Moby Games, for example.

Stickman (Level 5 Detective) at 4/27/2009 12:47:58 PM

No animation is a bit of a shame.....

skamocore (Level 11 Psychopath) at 4/27/2009 12:25:15 PM

@Adarias, You may use exact gameboy restrictions if you like but it's entirely optional.

I would love to see some mock-ups that could theoretically be possible to play on a real Game Boy though, so if you want to make something that fits exact technical restrictions - go for it ;D

TheManuz (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 4/27/2009 9:52:25 AM

tripnfelt: doesn't "your own original" in the challenge rules rule out making a demake?

 Right, i didn't noticed that...

Lollige (Level 11 Psychopath) at 4/27/2009 8:47:15 AM

thank you, good challenge :)

Reo (Level 11 Sensei) at 4/27/2009 7:42:13 AM

Inspiration and list of restrictions(for those that wants a challenge)

mozzy (Level 1 Jukyu) at 4/27/2009 6:36:20 AM

Doesnt that mean it has to be a gameboy-game that has never before seen? Doesnt mean the idea has to be original...

I was thinking this too. I hope so. I'm almost done with my piece :<

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) at 4/27/2009 6:24:18 AM

At all, especially Adarias who asked:

I don't think technical Gameboy restrictions are called for this week, other than 4 colors. Its just a celebration of the Gameboy.

I think forcing the 3 color sprite is just gonna be extra confusing and hard to keep track of so we'll allow 4 on them.

Adarias (Level 8 Brigadier General) at 4/27/2009 6:00:14 AM

Are we sticking to restrictions like sprites only affording 3 colors+trans? Or 8*8 tiles?

Stickman (Level 5 Detective) at 4/27/2009 5:56:33 AM

Tomic should be banned from entry!!!! His last mock up is way to sweet!

i'm gonna celebrate you my love!

jiipm (Level 1 Rookie) at 4/27/2009 4:53:20 AM

Doesnt that mean it has to be a gameboy-game that has never before seen? Doesnt mean the idea has to be original...

tripnfelt (Level 4 Shichikyu) at 4/27/2009 3:43:00 AM

TheManuz (Level 5 Killer Klown) at 4/27/2009 3:02:08 AM

I like this challenge! But i need to think a nice subject to pixel... maybe a demake?

@-ViC-: Thanks for the link!

jiipm (Level 1 Rookie) at 4/27/2009 2:19:35 AM

Hey. I just joined and this will be the first challenge I will participate in :)

-ViC- (Level 5 Sniper) at 4/27/2009 1:57:55 AM

For more informations, you might wanna check out Pixelation's Game Boy De-Makes thread, especially if you're trying to stick to the restrictions and stuff like that.

Also, YEAH, mockup challenge :D
