Pixel Art Challenge: As Above, So Below

icon

This week, we want you to create the inseparable duo of video games: the sprite AND the portrait of the same character or monster. The game genre and the perspective of the sprite is entirely up to you. You can use a border for the portrait. You must separate them from eacother by transparency.

Canvas Size - Max 100x200
Colours - Max 14
Transparency - Required (to separate the portrait and sprite).
Animation - Optional.

The challenge thread will have all the challenge updates. The thread is also a great place to post your WIPs.

Gotcha! Thanks for the response.

@kodh

When unspecified, canvases can be in either orientation.  Otherwise we will write for instance 100 (horizontal) by 200 (vertical).  We will also include "exactly" when we care to.  So "Max 100x200" means either orientation, with smaller canvases allowed.

Portraits can have a border per the rules.  Sprites should be on a transparent BG, and the Sprite and Portrait should not overlap.

Rules are strictly applied to the large "detail" versions; typically small "preview" versions that show up in the queue have more leeway as long as they don't violate the spirit of the competition.

Does the canvas orientation can be changed? Portrait instead of landscape?
Can i color the character portrait's background for some contrast or does it need to be transparent either?

eishiya; we don't usually limit such things.

@ Eggy

You can pixel an already existing character. That is possible too, it just have to look like it comes from a video game.

@ eishiya

If you manage to fit a few poses and a decent portrait in your entry, go ahead.

@Jeff

Nope, als long as the sprite isn't too small and readable.

Is there any size limit for the portrait?

user
eishiya (Level 6 SWAT) @ 11/26/2018 20:05

Can there be more than one sprite of the same character in an entry, or would I need to animate it if I want to include multiple poses?

Eggy (Level 4 Deputy) @ 11/26/2018 13:47

Does the character/monster have to be original? Or can it be an existing one (e.g. Mega Man) and if so, is it limited to video game characters only or can you, for example, use a character from literature and adapt it to a video game style sprite and portrait?

Either way this looks neat. Might make something but as always there are no guarantees
