How about a limit of how many pixels you put on the site in 24 hours or something? I know you're only *supposed* to put 4 in a day but let's make it so you can't go over that limit.

Also, I like Surt's 0-dot rating idea.

something simple that would be great IMO, would be a number that displays how many new pixels got added since the last visit

Sorry for the Double post :/

Something that I think would be cool thing would be some kind of "Artist of the Week", a small box that displays one random Piece of the given member.

Not sure how the voting of the Artist would be done, though...

Maybe the highest total rating points gained in a week?
People cannot be Artist of the Week 2 times in a row or more than say 10 a year?

something simple that I kept noticing: When you click on your username or the "messages" link in the gallery it takes you to the message inbox. Instead of this, could clicking on our username take us to our gallery and the message link to our inbox? that would make things more easy, and practical also.

Thats a good point Metaru. I hardly ever look at my gallery, I live by my comment/PM list so I never noticed that.

This was previously available but was removed. A bulk collection from you and your lovely pixels would be easy to go through and review. But what if say someone really retarded like my classic example, Flamerule13 added 40-50 AIM crapola ones and after being subjected to the horror of each one individually they had to go back? Or one by luck was ok and the others not.

We prefer that you all at least have to suffer beforehand by submitting one at a time just in case.

I just had a though: In the queue when you vote "No" it shouldn't register that vote until you've left a comment.

Why? Because people vote 'no' for a reason, but posting in the WIP forums doesn't necessarily mean those same people will comment. In other words some flaws could go unnoticed.

Besides, if you're anything like Nixon, it's a great way to build your... 'list'.

Seriously though, I'm sure everyone agrees that it's always nice to, at the very least, know the reason why.

There should be a limit to the number of Accounts you can make on your IP address. I'm not to bright myself, but I bet there are plenty of brilliant sneaky people around who make more accounts just to get their votes up.

Multiple accounts happen but, double-dipping for ratings are quickly noticed by even the most retarded of Mods (me).

Something that would be nice is domain global cookies. So pixeljoint.com and www.pixeljoint.com use the same session. Really annoys me when I press a link which takes me to the other where I'm logged off and default theme.

Either that or have the one redirect to the other.

I file a motion that we make Dumbo's emotes the official emotes of Pixel Joint!
  • It's not like they're not being used already. (Looks in the direction of the old bug.) I see that as an official endorsement by the establishment.
  • This is an art site. Why use generic emotes when emotes have been custom made to suit the theme.
Naturally this means Dumbo should get a star for his efforts.

Now who's with me?

Something that really sh*ts me off is when people use separate preview images unnecessarily.

They post a tiny sprite for the detail image and cut it in half for the preview image.

Wastes everybody's time and PJ's bandwidth.

It'd be nice if a detail image weren't allowed if it isn't bigger than 100x100.

I don't know if this has already been posted:

What about a new subforum with Pixel guides/tutorials? That would be good for many people, I could also use it.

Btw, can you add the Tahoma font? I like that font

Daviid, the rescource forum has enough posssibility to add new ones and lots of old ones, and I think there would not be posted enough in an extra tutorial forum.

Also, maybe you like a font but some people (like me for example) really hate it when people change the layout from their whole post.. I dont see any reason why fonts should be added. actually 1 type of font is enough for me.

Surt: I think its not usefull enough to worry about.. Well I dont atleast..

Ideas:

I've always wanted counters for "Total Members" and "Total Pixel Arts"
Also, a bigger "Latest Members" list would be nice.
Maybe Karma?
More artist interviews?
A place on the user's profile that says when they last visited the site or are on at the time.
PM instant messaging?

Thoughts on Other Ideas:

Rating on the preview should only be allowed if there is no detail pic

As a CerealKiller's n00blet, I would like to see a WIP section on the main site, so people can look for Wips and see the current version, C&C, and It wouldnt take up thread space, you'd Be able to press a button and your  Ex-Wip would go to an AWAITING APROVAL spot.  So you have The same Wip process in much less time.

Organised "groups" for projects, for example a team of people are making a game: they could have their own "sub page" on pixel joint where they can recruit, show updates, ask the pixel joint users their opinion and privately exchange ideas.

Pixel Joint Breakdown

As of 7/20/2008 12:52:23 PM PST there are 16617 members who have submitted 21587 active pixel art pieces, 1304 news posts, 643 links, 1384719 ratings, posted 183204 comments, pondered 1712 quotes and saved 90373 pieces as favorites.

?

@Jalonso

I meant that when they are accepted, they are all shown on the same page. This would make it so nubbcakes don't have to spam the gallery with tons of small sprites, and you could add on to existing collections.

I have never made a website B4 and I don't know how difficult some features are to create but I think it would be useful if the drop-down menu for 'Gallery' had an "unseen(X)" section where it takes you to all the art that you haven't seen the detail image of. This would probably have to be in the past 12 months because otherwise there would be too many pages of it. I couldn't really think of anything to improve the visual or customisation areas. oh, I better take of that merry christmas sig....

More awards would be nice (made weekly showcase, etc.)

Expanding on the awards thing, some people have a whole lot of awards and I think that you should only see the last couple of awards that they have recieved, but also be able to see all of them on a seperate page.

Maybe have an average rating of pieces like Youtube has (this could be either uplifting for good ratings or depressing for low ratings so I'm not sure about this entirely).

More leveling classes or even custom ones?

Another suggestion would be different smiley schemes. For example, if you have selected a certain scheme (dumbo, pie, etc.) for your smileys, all the smileys that you see will be in that scheme so that you don't get a plethora of different smileys all over.

I would like to see a different layout because right now, everything seems to be unorganized and scattered all over the front page ie site breakdown, quotes, about. (maybe personally customizeable layouts also).

Pixel fonts would be cool, but they should be optional.

That's all I can think of atm...

Atm there're some small quirks with PJ that should be solved in next version (at least I hope so):
  • votes sometimes seems to disappear, expecially if you vote the preview and then click to see the full version
  • sometimes pieces submitted and approved don't get in home page
  • preview images should have a "popup" with the title/poster, usually this can be gained simply with the "alt" attribute for <img> and the "title" attribute for <a>
  • messages to the inbox are *sometimes* not notified: this is not a feature, is a bug :P
There's a thing I'd like new version will consider seriously:
the "new works" preview on home page is very small: usually I've seen that new works are approved slowly just to let them visible on home page enough, but it can happen that the queue is clogging, and it can happen that some artworks that can be missed easily.
IMHO there should be a way to improve this and give more visibility even to ppl that are new or need to improve, letting others comment on them: maybe a scroller (like the preview window that has the gallery on flickr) can do the trick, dunno.
Another simple way to improve this is by providing RSS feeds for latest pixel. I really miss RSS feed on PJ, I really like them everywhere :)
An even more futuristic thing could improve the social thing on PJ and export APIs or XMLs to make reasonings on them, for example providing a way that I can be able to use my gallery on PJ directly on my own website.

this is what it comes to my mind for now... my 2 ¢

aw, almost forgot: I don't remember if it's been already said, but a tutorial section MUST be visible and easily accessible from the homepage. maybe a section divided in different areas: programs/tools/techniques... and so on will be nice.

One suggestion is to make the gallery more searchable. For instance, a box for selecting a time period (between x date and y date), in conjunction with a sort by option (sort by date, rating, # faves, unrated by oneself, etc. Ascending or descending) would making searching more useful. Also, the categories for pieces (scenes, sprites, etc.) should be selectable from the search page. As is, it seems like these categories are an after-thought.
Also, could we have a little symbol next to the preview if there is a larger detail picture? I hate clicking on a piece to find that the preview was in fact the whole piece. Just a little arrow or something subtle next to the title.

Question, will we still be able to apply/make different themes?

well, i'm very sorry if this counts as a double post, but maybe this is the "righter" place and i just missed this thread before:

afaik, the appearing of detail images in a popup only works while voting for the weekly challenge. when i look at older challenges, and the submissions made to the actual challenge, i need to open all pieces in a new tab/window to view them! that annoys me a little bit.

then, i would like to see what piece i already marked as favourite. it would save me some clicks ^^ and would just be.... informative.

i would also like a counter how many times a piece/my profile was visited.

and i would really love to know how many people have voted so far in a challenge. would make great stats about user participation. anonymous, of course.

Oh the irony of your suggestions.
If you were able to view by popups like the challenge voting is then no one would ever actually go to the piece itself and rate/vote/fave them so the count would be ZERO for everyone. Its a little annoying, true, but...

I don't think this has been suggested...

Maybe a new way to resize art that won't smooth it out (a new feature in Firefox that you cannot disable).

Oi, latest news is that the Bilinear filtering problem is going to be fixed, or has been already.

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=423756

https://developer.mozilla.org/En/CSS/image-rendering

Just use the metatags included in the second link when displaying pixel art. I don't think the html has been implemented into gecko yet, but it probably will be when it reaches v1.9.2 (currently 1.9.0.11). I'm not sure how it'll render in firefox as it is currently, so you might want to test it.

The "image-rendering: -moz-crisp-edges;" line will need to be added to the site's CSS somewhere for this to work.

Even then it won't work with the current Firefox release, as it needs Gecko 1.9.2, while the current release only uses Gecko 1.9.0.11.

I'd guess we'll have to wait for Firefox 3.5 or you could try a beta.

Could be a way to chose the background color when we are posting/editing some piece?

Like this...?

I have a little question, and i preferred to post it here instead of oppening a new topic
So, why there are some few pixel arts in the galleries with a preview image larger that 100x100px? Like, in the 7th page of the Hall of Fame there's a flamingo with a 150px height, and in the 1st page the shark is 111px tall

Ok, so I was looking over a bunch of FAQs and stuff around here, and then I got to the leveling system...

  • Posting Pixel Art = 6 points
  • Submitting News = 5 points
  • Submitting Links = 4 points
  • Submitting Quotes = 4 points
  • Posting Comments = 3 points
  • Rating = 1 point

Now I realize that the whole thing is automated, and turning it over to human hands would be down right murderous. But you guys (the mods) are here to serve us, you're the waiter, we're the snooty customer, so it's our duty to make your lives as miserable as possible at every chance we get. XD

Seriously though, I don't think it should give you 6 points for submitting pixels. All pixels are different. The system should be scaled to reflect that. Maybe the number of points you get should be based on the ratings it gets from the members. Because as far as I can tell those little blue orbs are completely useless as no one but the person who gave is aware of them in any way, shape or form. (Except the mods.)

Submitting news should not give you 5 points. The only real news that shows up are the weekly challenges. Everything else is just some random 8-bit youtube video or some blog that briefly mentions pixel art, not really worth the 5 points. Again, it should be scaled based on relevance.

Personally I think that submitting quotes should be worth a whopping 100 points. Simply for the fact that out of the 300+ quotes that I've submitted so far a measly 8 got in. 8 out of 300! Having a quote entered into the database is like winning the lottery, so it should be treated as such. XD

Ok, this is where you're all going to get out the pitchforks and torches and try to run me out of town now... XD

Submitting comments should be worth 1, count'em 1, measly point. How many of us got a fat point count because of the chatterbox? How many comments are actually helpful C&C worth the 3 points? 1 comment, 1 point. And hell, we should nerf the chatterbox to 1/10th of a point.

(I reckon that it's going to be 'taken under consideration' and never see the light of day like most suggestions.) XD

For the .gif frame by frame viewer thing you could have it be a option.
So all you would do is have the artist submit a folder containing all the frames and then the .gif slow down thing will animate the frames at whatever speed you could possibly want.
I don't know what your gonna program the pjv3 in but if you using php all you would need is the gd-graphics library.

I think you said you didn't want forum stuff, but this seems the best place to ask~

An option to decrease the zoom of a picture in the forum after you've zoomed it would be very helpful...

I feel very silly now

erm... you probably have this as well, but I haven't seen it, but maybe a 'See Random Pixel' button on the front page/when a pixel is displayed? It would help older and less seen pixels be seen.

There isn't one on the front page, but a link exists on the top right of every gallery piece page. This is the url to find a random piece: http://pixeljoint.com/pixels/getrandom_pixelart.asp

You made my day. That's all I could think of~

[E] I'll probably be shown that something like this is already there again, but what about on entries to older contests having the award/ribbon link to the contest page, so people can look at the other entries? And at that, might as well make the ribbons in a member's profile link to the contest too, so you know which they won.
