Its fin on the other side seems too dark... it almost can't be seen because of blending with the black. Maybe try making it a lighter color?
WIP of mine: ![]() It's just the basic outline I'll work on. But I dunno if we can depict more then one cetacean... |

Gives a larger impression of distance, at least that's what I've observed from more successful artists. |

@randomboy2007 That looks a lot better now. :)
My WIP has reached stage 2: ![]() Nebulae & other stuff coming soon. I know about the black outline being almost as dark as the background, I plan on removing it anyway. |

@Eggy, your lineart and comp are nice but seeing (gallery submission) your coloring choices you have hurt your piece, imo. Especially the yellow planet.

I tried to go for natural colors as much as possible, and also tried to use as less colors as possible; it eventually resulted in the narwhal and the planet sharing colors. When I looked at a complete image of a narwhal, it was ochre with splotches of darker ochre on its body, and due to wanting to use as less colors as possible, I had to make the planet and the narwhal share colors since I figured they‘re the only colors that fit for the planet.
So, what can I do about colors? :) |

@Eggy, its not the colors its the pixel placement and coloring choices you've made. The dithering and fades stand out on their own in a way that it stands out from the design and take away focus from the creatures.

Oh, that. To be honest, I don't think I had an other choice than to dither without having to use more colors; I'd rather stay at the 15 color count. Is there anything else I could've done instead of dithering to get the desired result without adding more colors? :)

Eggy, you are only limited by yourself. Here there is texture dithering, cell shading, clustering, etc.
I'm not sayng to change anything I'm just pointing out that when the pixelling and pixel patterns stand out more that the design and art itself then that needs attention. |

I had no idea what to do with the nebula (I tried but it didn't help much), but I did do a little change to the planet and I'm also providing the previous one for comparison:
![]() ![]() I need comments on this; does the planet from the image on the left look better than the planet from the image on the right? I wanted to make it look like a gas giant... EDIT: I figured out what do with the nebula, but I dunno if it was a good idea... replacing the left image with a new one. Edited by Eggy - 03 October 2013 at 8:17am |

@Eggy
I'd lose all the dithering, personally. The transition in the background color occurs right near the animals. I think that hurts it. I'd keep the background a solid color. When working with outer space, the sun should really be evident as a lightsource and you could get some cool shadow effects going on. Your original lineart with solid colors imo is much better visually than the current piece. Edited by ParkerBabyDiaperCompany - 03 October 2013 at 1:14pm |

![]() I'm new to this site and thought I would throw my hat in the ring (so to speak). Here is my work in progress. Still needs blending, dithering or AA, and some clean up. It's coming along though. Edited by RetroGamer - 03 October 2013 at 3:26pm |

@RetroGamer- I like the background. But the pillow shading on the foreground might be a little too strong. It's rather distracting. Perhaps change the light source, slightly? So it no super backlit, giving that poor pillow shading effect.

@crozier - Thanks for the feedback. I noticed that after I had submitted. I should have spread it out more giving it more of a horizon appearance. Didn't notice this challenge until Wednesday so maybe I can get a better start on the next challenge. C'est la vie.
